  • HARTFORD, CT – The seventh-seeded Rutgers women’s basketball team (21-10, 10-6 BIG EAST) began the second half with a 7-0 run to open up a double-digit lead, cruising to a 61-51 victory against sixth-seeded West Virginia (21-10, 10-6 BIG EAST) in the BIG EAST Championship’s semifinal round March 8 at the Hartford Civic Center.

With the victory, the Scarlet Knights have advanced to the tournament championship game, where they will face No. 5 Boston College (24-6, 10-5 BIG EAST) Tuesday, March 9, at 7:00 p.m. The game will be shown live on ESPN, and will be carried live on WCTC 1450 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the audio will be available on www.scarletknights.com.

Redshirt junior Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) scored six consecutive points to give RU a 24-21 lead with 1:45 remaining in the first half, and the Knights entered the locker room with a 29-25 advantage. Rutgers then scored the first seven points of the second half, and built a 14-point edge (48-34) with less than nine minutes remaining in the game. The Mountaineers were only able to cut that lead to single digits once (50-41, 6:37) the rest of the way.

Junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) posted a game-best 24 points on 10-for-20 (.500) shooting. Jett tallied 11, while sophomore Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) recorded her second career double-double with her 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) became the 23rd member of the Rutgers 1,000-point club with her layup at the 7:12 mark of the first half. She finished the game with 11 points and 13 rebounds for her third career double-double, and first of the season, but she was forced to leave the game with six seconds remaining due to an injury.

Rutgers pounded the boards, outrebounding the Mountaineers 44-27, and RU held West Virginia to a 36.4 (20-55) percent shooting effort. Since giving up a season-worst 80 points to the Mountaineers Feb. 24, Rutgers has held its last five opponents to an average of 47.4 points per contest.

Rutgers will be the second seventh seed to ever play in the BIG EAST Tournament’s championship game. In 1993, host and seventh-seeded Providence lost to No. 1 Miami 77-56. It will mark RU’s third appearance in the BIG EAST Championship final, and first since 2000, as the Scarlet Knights look to win their first-ever title.
