  • HARTFORD, CT – Three Scarlet Knights reached double figures in scoring as the seventh-seeded Rutgers women’s basketball team (19-10, 10-6 BIG EAST) defeated 10th-seeded Seton Hall (14-14, 6-10 BIG EAST) 51-42 in the BIG EAST Championship’s first round March 6 at the Hartford Civic Center.

With the victory, the Scarlet Knights advance to the tournament quarerterfinals, where they will face No. 2 Notre Dame (19-9, 12-4 BIG EAST) Sunday, March 7, at 6:00 p.m. The game will be carried live on WCTC 1450 AM, WMTR 1250 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM, and a live stream of the audio will be available on www.scarletknights.com.

Rutgers led 20-17 at halftime, but steadily built its lead to a 38-25 advantage with 8:19 to play. Junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) scored seven points during the spurt and senior Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) had nine to help RU build its double-digit advantage. The Scarlet Knights scored the final 11 points from the free-throw line, making 16 of 20 (.800) in the second half after a 2-for-7 (.286) effort in the first 20 minutes.

Pondexter led RU with 18 points, making six of her seven attempts at the charity stripe. Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) had 15 tallies, while Hurns contributed 11 points. McCullouch and junior Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) tied for the team rebounding lead with six apiece.

Rutgers, playing Seton Hall for second time in five days, held the Pirates to just 42 points, this after allowing the same team only 45 tallies in the regular-season finale. RU also reversed Seton Hall’s 11-rebound advantage from the March 2 game as the Knights outrebounded the Pirates 34-24.
