  • PISCATAWAY, NJ - Junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) scored 20 points as Rutgers (17-10, 9-6 BIG EAST) strengthened it post-season resume with a 69-55 victory over Notre Dame (18-9, 11-4 BIG EAST) on Feb. 28 before 4,389 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Pondexter’s 20 points moved her over 1,000 for her career, making her the 22nd Scarlet Knight to reach the milestone.

RU broke a close game open early in the second half. Holding a 34-32 lead with 14:54 remaining in the game, the Scarlet Knights went on a 21-6 run over the next eight and a half minutes to give them their largest lead of the game (55-38) and forced the second-place Irish to burn a pair of 30-second timeouts. The run was keyed by reserve Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC), who scored all seven of her points on a pair of jumpers and a three-pointer during the stretch.

Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) scored in double figures for the second straight game and was second on the team with 16 points to go with her team-high nine rebounds. Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) joined Campbell and Pondexter in double figures with 11 points on 5-for-5 shooting, while Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) blocked a pair of shots and pulled down six rebounds. Preseason all-BIG EAST first-team selection Jacqueline Batteast led Notre Dame with 25 points (10-for-17), while Megan Duffy chipped in with 14 points, but the Scarlet Knight defense did an excellent job as no other Fighting Irish player scored more than six points.

RU headed into the locker room with a three-point lead (27-24) at the half. Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm early, but the Scarlet Knights were able to build their largest lead of the half as they went on a 7-0 run to go up 23-16 with 5:41 remaining. The Irish answered with a run of their own, scoring eight consecutive points to regain the lead, 24-23, with 3:39 to go in the half.

Rutgers answered back with layups from Campbell and Newton to finish out the scoring in the half. Pondexter paced the Scarlet Knights with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and Campbell pulled down a team-high five boards. Batteast led all players with 12 points, but the Rutgers defense held ND to just 34.6 (9-for-26) percent shooting in the half.

The Scarlet Knights will play their final regular-season game of the year when they host in-state rival Seton Hall on Tuesday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN
Rutgers moves to 17-10 overall, 9-6 in the BIG EAST and 13-1 at home.

    WELCOME TO THE CLUB
With her 20 points, junior All-American Cappie Pondexter joined exclusive company. On the front end of a one-and-one with 5:05 remaining in the game, she scored her 1,000th career point, and her total now stands at 1,004. She is the 22nd member of the 1,000-point club. It also marked the 10th time this season that she has scored 20 or more points in a game. She achieved the feat 14 times last season.

    CLEANING THE GLASS
The Scarlet Knights once again out-rebounded their opponent despite a lack of size and bench players. Notre Dame is ranked seventh in the conference in rebounding (37.3 rpg), two spots ahead of Rutgers (35.4 rpg), but RU held a 29-27 advantage under the boards.

    LIGHTS OUT
Rutgers shot a blistering 72.7 (16-for-22) percent in the second half, which was the best percentage for a half this season. The previous best for a half was 60.7 (17-for-28) percent against St. John’s on Jan. 17.

    HOME COOKIN’
The crowd of 4,389 is the second largest of the season to witness a women’s basketball game at the RAC, bested only by the 7,734 to attend the match-up with No. 1 UConn on Feb. 14.

    STEPPING IT UP
For the second consecutive game, Michelle Campbell scored in double figures and hit the boards hard. Following her career-high 23 points at West Virginia on Feb. 24, she scored 16 points and narrowly missed a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.

    UP NEXT
The Scarlet Knights will host intra-state, BIG EAST rival Seton Hall in their final regular season game of the year on Tuesday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m., as they attempt to win their 10th conference game of the year. RU will also honor Dawn McCullouch as part of its “Senior Night” pre-game activities.
