  • MORGANTOWN, WV – The West Virginia women's basketball team (19-7, 10-4 BE) shot 60.4% from the floor en route to an 80-71 win over Rutgers (16-10, 8-6 BE) tonight at the WVU Colesium. The Scarlet Knights wasted a superb effort from sophomore Michelle Campbell, who scored a career-best 23 points on 11-of-13 shooting from the floor.

Both teams shot well to open the game, as the Scarlet Knights and Mountaineers combined to hit 8 of the game's first 10 shots, with WVU building a 10-6 lead at the 15:57 mark. A pair of buckets from Cappie Pondexter tied the game at 10-10 with 15:01 left to play in the opening half, but WVU responded with a 5-0 mini-run to reclaim the lead and held for most of the first half, opening a seven-point advantage on two separate occasions before Rutgers made a late run to close the half.

With the Mountaineers leading, 27-20, RU used back-to-back baskets from Campbell and a three-pointer from Courtney Locke to pull within two, 29-27, at the 5:12 mark. A fastbreak layup from Campbell then tied the game at 29-29 and RU led for the final 2:32 of the half before a layup from WVU's Yolanda Paige knotted the game at 36-36 at the break.

After shooting a blistering 71.4% in the opening half (15-for-21), the Mountaineers kept their offense rolling in the second half, hitting 14 of 27 (51.9%) while Rutgers was held to 45.2% shooting. Although WVU struck first in the second period, Rutgers controlled the lead for the first 13 minutes of play. The Scarlet Knights went ahead, 65-59, on a layup by Shalicia Hurns at the 7:26 mark, but WVU countered with a 12-2 run, capped by a three-pointer from Kate Bulger, to take a 71-67 lead with 4:12 left to play. RU cut the lead to two, 71-69, on a pair of free throws by Pondexter, but it would get no closer, as Bulger pumped in another three with 1:46 left and Yolanda Paige hit three free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Campbell led all scorers with 23, besting her previous career high of 16, set on Jan. 17 vs. St. John's. Pondexter was the only other RU player to reach double figures with 12 points, although she connected on just 3-of-16 shots from the floor. Shalicia Hurns and Chelsea Newton added nine apiece, while Nikki Jett added eight. Bulger led WVU with 22, one of five in double figures. Janelle Dunlap added 15 on 6-of-8 shooting, while Michelle Carter hit all five of her shots while scoring 12.

The loss drops RU to 4-9 in road games this season and WVU's 60.4% shooting represents the highest opponent field goal percentage of the year. Opponents entered the game shooting just 40.1% from the floor. RU is back in action on Saturday, when it hosts Notre Dame at noon.
