  • WASHINGTON, DC – In a game marked by come backs from both teams, as well as a total of 82 free throws attempted, the Rutgers women’s basketball team (16-9, 8-5 BIG EAST) outlasted Georgetown (11-13, 5-8 BIG EAST) 71-66 Feb. 21 in Washington, DC.

Rutgers and Georgetown changed leads several times in the first half, until RU put together an 8-4 run to end the half and lead 29-24 at the break. However, the Hoyas answered with an 8-0 spurt following the intermission to regain the lead (32-29, 14:38), eventually owning as much as a seven-point cushion (41-34, 10:14).

The Scarlet Knights later reeled off nine unanswered points to take a 48-45 lead (7:26), and were up by seven (65-58) with 57 seconds on the clock. Georgetown made two late three-pointers, cutting the lead to two (68-66) with less than 20 seconds to play, but junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) made three of four free throws in the game’s final moments to seal the victory.

Personal fouls and free throws played a prominent role in deciding the game’s outcome. A total of 55 fouls were called, five players fouled out, and 82 free throws were awarded. The difference came in the teams’ success rates – RU made 31 of 44 (.705), while the Hoyas shot 23-for-28 (.605).

Pondexter led Rutgers with 22 points, shooting 13-for-17 (.765) from the charity stripe. Redshirt junior Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) had her second consecutive double-digit scoring effort with her 13 tallies. Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) added 10 points.

Rutgers will be back in action Tuesday, Feb. 24, when the Scarlet Knights travel to Morgantown, WV, to take on West Virginia. The game, which will tipoff at 7:00 p.m., will be carried live on WRSU 88.7 FM.
