  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) registered a season-high 20 points and Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) narrowly missed a triple-double as Rutgers (15-9, 7-5 BIG EAST) cruised to an 81-45 win over Providence (4-19, 0-12 BIG EAST) on Wednesday evening at the RAC.

    Jett and Hurns (12 points, nine rebounds, seven assists) paced a well-balanced offense as six players scored in double figures. The 81 points were a season high for RU, which shot 48.4 percent from the field.

    Rutgers controlled the game from the start, building a 12-1 lead four minutes into regulation. Jett was the offensive star for RU, as she matched her season high with 13 points in the first 20 minutes of action. RU’s frontline of Hurns and Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) combined for 13 points and 10 rebounds as Rutgers built a 40-19 halftime advantage.

    RU scored 13 of the first 17 points in the second half and never looked back. The Scarlet Knights forced 22 Providence turnovers, scoring 20 points off those miscues.

    Campbell finished with 13 points, while Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL), Courtney Locke (San Marcos, TX) and Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) each had 10 points.

    The win improves Rutgers’ home record to 12-1. The Scarlet Knights are winning by an average of 16.2 points per game in those contests. The 36-point margin of victory was RU’s largest of the season, surpassing a 25-point win over St. John’s Jan. 17.

    Providence was paced by Brooke Freeburg with 13 points. The Friars received just eight points from leading scorer Gayle Nwafili, marking the 16th time this season Rutgers had held the opponent’s leading scorer below her average.

    Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 21, when it travels to Washington, DC for a pivotal BIG EAST match-up against Georgetown at 3:00 p.m.

    WITH THE WIN
    Tonight’s 81-45 over Providence improves Rutgers’ record to 15-9 overall and 7-5 in the BIG EAST. It is the Scarlet Knights’ 11th straight win over the Friars.

    UNDER 20 IN FIRST HALF
    Providence failed to reach the 20-point mark in the first half, and it was the fifth time this season that Rutgers has held an opponent below 20 points in a half.

    JETT SPARKS OFFENSE
    Junior Nikki Jett made her fifth start of the season and provided a lift to the Rutgers offense, matching her season high with in points (13) after the first 20 minutes of action. She finished with 20 points in 34 minutes.

    HOME SWEET HOME
    Rutgers’ record this season at the Louis Brown Athletic Center now stands at 12-1, and the Scarlet Knights are winning by an average of 16.2 points per game. In C. Vivan Stringer’s tenure at RU, the Scarlet Knights are 97-35 at the RAC.

    DOING IT WITH DEFENSE
    As has become the norm this season, Rutgers forced Providence to turn the ball over more frequently then usual. The Scarlet Knights, averaging 16.9 forced turnovers per game prior to tonight’s contest, caused 22 Friar turnovers, scoring 20 points off those miscues.

    HURNS SEES DOUBLE
    Shalicia Hurns narrowly missed the first triple-double of her career, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds and a career-high seven assists.

    LARGEST MARGIN OF VICTORY
    Tonight’s 36-point win is RU’s largest this season, surpassing a 25-point victory over St. John’s Jan. 17.

    SIX IN DOUBLE FIGURES
    A well-balanced offense saw six players score in double figures. It was the first time this season six players scored at least 10 points. Against Ole Miss on Nov. 16, five players scored in double figures.
