Rutgers Falls to #2/1 Connecticut, 66-43

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – The No. 2/1 Connecticut Huskies (20-2, 10-1 BIG EAST) held Rutgers (14-9, 6-5 BIG EAST) to just two field goals over the first 14:16 of the first half en route to a 66-43 victory at a sold-out Louis Brown Athletic Center on Saturday.

    UConn limited Rutgers to just 4-for-27 (.148) shooting in the first half as it built a 34-10 halftime advantage. The Huskies, meanwhile, shot 51.9 percent in the first 20 minutes, and outrebounded Rutgers 27-12. The Huskies began the game on a 21-2 run over the first 11:06 of regulation.

    Rutgers would get as close as 16 (54-38) with 6:15 to play, but Connecticut scored six of the next eight points to take a 60-40 lead with 4:35 remaining.

    The Scarlet Knights’ leading scorer was senior guard Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA), who had 14 points. Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) added nine points, while Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) contributed eight points.

    For UConn, four players scored in doubles figures, led by Barbara Turner, who had 27 points and eight rebounds. Jessica Moore (10 points, 14 rebounds), Ann Strother (15 points, five rebounds) and Diana Taurasi (11 points) all contributed to a balanced offense. The Huskies shot 53.1 percent from the field, compared to 29.3 percent for Rutgers.

    The loss was the first of the year for Rutgers at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The Scarlet Knights are now 4-6 against ranked teams overall and 3-1 at home.

    Saturday’s attendance of 7,734 is the fifth largest all time for a women’s basketball game the RAC.

    Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18, when it hosts Providence. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE LOSS
    The Scarlet Knights fall to 14-9 overall and 6-5 in BIG EAST play. The loss also marks the first time that RU has fallen at home in 12 tries this season.

    AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS
    Rutgers is now 4-6 against ranked teams this season. The Scarlet Knights have played three teams currently residing in the top 10 of the polls (No. 2/1 Connecticut, No. 3/3 Tennessee and No. 7/7 Texas Tech).

    Tonight’s crowd of 7,734 was the fifth largest to witness a women’s game in Louis Brown Athletic Center history.

    DEFENSE STAYS STRONG
    Even in a loss, the RU defense made its presence felt. The Scarlet Knights held UConn 10 points below its scoring average of 76.6 points per game.

    PROTECTING THE ROCK
    As has become a trend this season, Rutgers was able to take care of the basketball. Rutgers had just nine turnovers, while forcing 19 UConn miscues.

    AGAINST THE TOP SCORERS
    For the 15th time in 22 games, Rutgers held the opponents’ leading scorer below her season average. The Huskies’ Diana Taurasi had 11 points, six below her average of 17.3.

    TOP TEAMS IN THE RAC
    For the second time this season, the top-ranked team in the country made an appearance in the Louis Brown Athletic Center. On Jan. 6, the No. 1 UConn men narrowly defeated the Scarlet Knights 77-76.
