PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers junior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named one of 12 finalists for the 2004 Nancy Lieberman Award, given annually to the top Division I point guard in women’s basketball.
Pondexter, a 5-9 guard, is averaging 18.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.9 steals per game for the Scarlet Knights this season. An honorable mention All-America selection by the Associated Press and Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) last season, she twice has been named the BIG EAST Conference Co-Player of the Week this winter, and she earned a spot on the Preseason WNIT All-Tournament Team. Pondexter, also a candidate for the State Farm Wade Trophy, the Wooden Women’s Award as well as the Naismith National Player-of-the-Year Award, has had 20 double-digit scoring games (seven 20+ points, two 30+ points), one double-digit rebounding game, one double-digit assists game and one double-double this season.
Pondexter was one of two rookies to be a Lieberman Award candidate last season.
The Scarlet Knights (14-8, 6-4 BIG EAST) will host No. 2/1 Connecticut Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7:00 p.m.
