  • CHESTNUT HILL, MA – Junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) poured in a career-high 35 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Rutgers women’s basketball team (13-8, 5-4 BIG EAST) lost at No. 25 Boston College (16-5, 6-4 BIG EAST) 78-72 Sunday.

The Eagles shot 61.9 (13-21) percent from the field in the first half and owned a 42-25 lead at the break. Boston College’s advantage grew to as many as 19 (53-34, 13:22) in the second half, but Rutgers steadily chipped away, narrowing the gap to five (74-69, 0:16) on a Pondexter three-point play. The Eagles made a pair of free throws, followed by a Pondexter three with seven seconds on the clock to make the score 76-72, but BC again went to the free-throw line and made a pair of attempts to ice the game.

Four Scarlet Knights fouled out of the game, as RU was whistled for 31 personal fouls, compared to 23 for the host Eagles. Boston College took full advantage of its trips to the free-throw line, shooting 32-for-40 (.800) overall and scoring 19 of its final 25 points from the charity stripe. Rutgers, on the other hand, was awarded just 27 free throws, and ended the game without an eligible substitute on the bench.

Pondexter made 14 of 25 (.560) field goals for her career-high 35 points, 26 of those tallies coming in the second half. Those 35 points tied for the eighth-best single-game total in RU history.

Senior Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) was the only other Scarlet Knight in double figures, contributing 10 points to go along with her game-high eight rebounds.

Rutgers will be back in action Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m.
