  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) scored 14 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as Rutgers (13-7, 5-3 BIG EAST) surged ahead of Syracuse (6-13, 3-6 BIG EAST) for a 61-45 victory on Wednesday at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) had a double-double with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds as Rutgers moved into a tie for fourth place with Miami (16-3, 5-3) in the BIG EAST standings. Pondexter’s double-double was the third of her career and the first of the season.

Rutgers finally gained control of the game midway through the second half, taking an 11-point lead (43-32) with just under 10 minutes to play. The Scarlet Knights were never seriously threatened from that point, and the final margin of victory (16 points) was their largest lead of the game.

Syracuse’s Julie McBride, the BIG EAST’s fourth-leading scorer prior to the game, was held to just eight points on 1-of-8 (.125) shooting. In SU’s 59-57 overtime win against Rutgers on Jan. 14, McBride exploded for a game-high 25 points.

Rutgers jumped out of the gate quickly, scoring 12 of the game’s first 14 points to lead 12-2 at the 13:19 mark of the first half. During the run, a suffocating Scarlet Knight defense forced seven turnovers and Syracuse made just 1-of-8 (.125) field goals. Syracuse, averaging just 13 turnovers per game, committed 13 in the first half alone.

Syracuse chipped away at the lead, however, and RU led 24-22 at halftime despite shooting just 31 percent from the floor (8-of-26). Newton scored seven points to lead the Scarlet Knights, while Pondexter chipped in with four points and seven rebounds.

Rutgers is now 11-0 at home this season and is holding opponents to an average of 49.9 points per game at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. Offensively, Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) came off the bench to score eight points and grab seven rebounds in 29 minutes of action.

RU will look to run its win streak to five games on Sunday, Feb. 8, when it travels to Chestnut Hill, MA, to face No. 25 Boston College in a game that will be televised live on MSG Network at 2:00 p.m.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN
Rutgers’ 61-45 victory over Syracuse improves the Scarlet Knights to 13-7 overall and 5-3 in the BIG EAST Conference. RU moves into a tie with Miami for fourth place in the conference standings.

    AHEAD AT THE BREAK
Despite shooting just 31 percent from the field in the first half, Rutgers led at halftime for the 14th time this season. RU is 12-2 in those games.

    TWENTY-TWENTY
Chelsea Newton, the BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week, finished with 21 points. At Miami on Jan. 31, Newton notched 21 points against the Hurricanes. It’s the first back-to-back 20-point efforts of her career.

    PONDEXTER ON THE REBOUND
Junior All-American guard Cappie Pondexter set a career-high with 12 rebounds, eclipsing her previous mark of 11 set on Feb. 9, 2003, at Seton Hall. Earlier this season, Pondexter had nine rebounds and narrowly missed a triple-double against St. John’s. It is the first double-double of the season and the third of her career.

    STILL PERFECT AT THE RAC
Tonight’s win over Syracuse ran RU’s home record to 11-0 this season. The Scarlet Knights are winning by an average of 14.4 points at home, holding the opposition to 49.9 points per game. Last season, Rutgers finished 11-2 at home.

    CONTAINING McBRIDE
SU’s Julie McBride came into tonight’s contest as the fourth-leading scorer in the BIG EAST Conference (16.9 points per game), but Rutgers held her to just eight points on 1-of-8 shooting. She did not make her first field goal until the 7:00 mark of the second half.

    CLEANING THE GLASS
Despite being undermanned and undersized in the post once again, Rutgers managed to outrebound Syracuse 40-30. The Scarlet Knights have outrebounded 15 of their 20 opponents this season.

    DOING IT WITH DEFENSE
Prior to tonight’s contest, Syracuse was averaging just 13.1 turnovers per game, the second lowest average in Division I. The Rutgers defense forced 18 Orangewomen miscues, scoring 19 points off those turnovers.

    RICHMAN AND BLOCKED SHOTS
With her blocked shot in the first half, Rebecca Richman moved into sole possession of 10th place on the all-time list with 58.

    HOME SWEET HOME
In the Rutgers-Syracuse series, the home team has won five consecutive games. Tonight’s win avenges a 59-57 overtime loss to the Orangewomen on Jan. 14, and improves RU’s all-time record to 29-8 when playing a team for the second time during the BIG EAST regular season.
