PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers junior Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Feb. 2.
Newton, a 5-11 guard, scored a season-high 21 points on 9-for-11 (.818) shooting in Rutgers’ 76-69 upset at No. 17/16 Miami Jan. 31. Newton also tied for the team lead with five assists and four steals, and held Miami’s Tamara James, a second-team all-BIG EAST selection in 2003, to just 10 points, 6.2 less than her season average.
In Rutgers’ two most recent games, Newton shot a combined 15-for-17 (.882) from the field. It marked the first weekly BIG EAST honor for Newton, and the third time this season that a Scarlet Knight has been named the conference’s co-player of the week (Cappie Pondexter, Dec. 15 and Jan. 5). Newton shared the Feb. 2 honor with Georgetown’s Rebekkah Brunson.
The Scarlet Knights (12-7, 4-3 BIG EAST) will host Syracuse (6-12, 3-5 BIG EAST) Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7:30 p.m. The game will be carried live on WCTC 1450 AM, WMTR 1250 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the audio will be available on www.scarletknights.com.
