  • CORAL GABLES, FL – The Rutgers women’s basketball team (12-7, 4-3 BIG EAST) built a double-digit lead in the second half and was able to withstand several Hurricane rallies, defeating No. 17/16 Miami (16-3, 5-3 BIG EAST) 76-69 in Coral Gables, FL, Jan. 31.

RU’s advantage ballooned to as many as 11 (57-46, 8:21) in the second half, but Miami twice was able to cut that lead to three in the last four minutes. The Scarlet Knights made six of eight (.750) free throws in the game’s final 45 seconds to seal the win, and the RU defense forced several critical Hurricane turnovers down the stretch.

Junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) led RU with 25 points, including an 8-for-9 (.889) effort from the free-throw line. Junior Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) sank nine of 11 (.818) field goals for her season-high 21 points, while Pondexter and Newton tied for team-high honors in assists (five) and steals (four). Senior Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) contributed a career-high 16 points off the bench, and junior Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) notched her second career double-digit rebounding total with her team-high 10 caroms.

Miami led 21-14 with 8:22 remaining before halftime, but Rutgers put together a 21-9 run to enter the locker room with a 35-30 lead. The Hurricanes scored the first seven points of the second half to again take the lead (37-35, 16:32), but the Scarlet Knights responded with a 14-2 spurt and took control of the game.

The win was Rutgers’ fourth of the season against a ranked team (4-4), and first against a top-25 team on the road (1-4). RU has now defeated Miami in four of its last five visits to Coral Gables, and avenged a 77-74 upset at the hands of the Hurricanes in the 2003 BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals on Rutgers’ home court.

Rutgers, which won its third consecutive game, shot 50.9 (29-57) percent from the field, outrebounded Miami 37-36, and registered 11 steals in the victory.

Rutgers will be back in action Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 7:30 p.m. when the Scarlet Knights host Syracuse.
