PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 24, 2013)   The WNBA regular season gets underway on Friday, May 24 with six former Scarlet Knights representing Rutgers in the league.

The Chicago Sky returns Epiphanny Prince and welcomes Michelle Campbell in hoping to capture the franchise’s first ever playoff berth.  Last season, the Sky, finished at 14-20 overall and fifth in the Eastern Conference.

Campbell returns stateside after playing for Tarsus Bld in the Turkish League.  The former Scarlet Knight has played for several professional teams throughout Europe along working out at the Washington Mystics’ summer camp in 2006 and briefly joining the Detroit Shock in 2008.  Suiting up for Turkish Club Ceyhan Bld, Campbell was named to the 2009 All-Star Team and received All-Turkish League Honorable Mention pouring in 15.5 points per game along with a league leading 10.2 rebounds per contest. In the 2009-10 season, she was the top scorer in the Turkish league with 21.4 points per game, shooting 69.2% from the field, along with 8.9 rebounds per game.

Prince, who during the season will spend a month with the Russian National Team playing in the EuroBasket Tournament and miss six games, enters her fourth season on the Sky roster after being drafted by Chicago as the fourth overall pick in the 2010 WNBA draft.  Last season Prince averaged a career-best 18.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.  In her three seasons in the league, she has poured in 13.5 points per game along with 2.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists per appearance.  In addition to being named to the 2010 All-Rookie Team, Prince was one of three Scarlet Knights featured in the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game

The New York Liberty roster boasts Essence Carson and Cappie Pondexter.  The Liberty closed out the 2012 campaign at 15-19 overall and fourth in the Eastern Conference.  New York reached the playoffs for the third straight season in 2012, falling to the Connecticut Sun in the conference semifinals.

Carson begins her fifth year with the Liberty after being drafted seventh overall by New York in the 2008 draft.  She is coming off a 2012 campaign in which she scored a career-best 11.6 points and 1.7 rebounds per game.  Over the course of her career with the Liberty, which include playoff appearances the last three seasons, she has poured in 8.6 points along with 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest.  Carson currently ranks eighth in Liberty history with 1,444 career points.  In 2011, Carson represented the Eastern Conference in the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game, one of three Scarlet Knights featured in the game.

Pondexter, named one of the Top-15 Players in WNBA history, starts her eighth season in the league and her fourth with the New York Liberty.  Drafted by Phoenix as the second overall selection in 2006, Pondexter played four seasons with the Mercury, including championship seasons in 2007 & 2009, before joining the Liberty.  During her career, Pondexter has been the 2007 WNBA Finals MVP, a four-time WNBA All-Star (2006, 2007, 2009, 2011) and three-time All-WNBA First Team selection (2009, 2010, 2012).  Currently third in WNBA history in scoring average, last season, Pondexter averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game. She is fifth in the New York franchise’s history in total scoring having racked up 2,015 points.

The Washington Mystics meanwhile brought Kia Vaughn on board from the Liberty this spring and return Matee Ajavon.   The Mystics finished last year at 5-19 overall and sixth in the Eastern Conference.

Vaughn was traded by the New York Liberty, where she was the draft’s eighth overall selection in 2009 .  Beginning her fifth season with the WNBA, Vaughn has averaged 5.9 points and 4.0 rebounds in her career.  In 2011, Vaughn averaged a career-best 10.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.  She helped the Liberty advance to playoff action for three straight seasons from 2009-2012.

Ajavon begins her fifth season with the Mystics and sixth season overall in the league.  She was drafted fifth overall in the 2008 draft by the Houston Comets before joining Washington and helping the Mystics to playoff appearances in 2009 and 2010.  In her career, Ajavon is averaging 8.9 points, 1.9 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, including a career-best 14.7 points per game average during the 2011 campaign.
