  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers junior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named to the Wooden Women’s Award Midseason All-America Team. The junior 5-9 guard is one of 20 players expected to make a run at the first-ever Wooden Women’s Award, which will be awarded to the nation’s top Division I basketball player at the conclusion of the 2003-2004 season.

Pondexter is averaging 17.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game for the Scarlet Knights this season. An honorable mention All-America selection by the Associated Press and Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) last season, she twice has been named the BIG EAST Conference Co-Player of the Week this winter, and she earned a spot on the Preseason WNIT All-Tournament Team. Pondexter, also a candidate for the State Farm Wade Trophy as well as the Naismith National Player-of-the-Year Award, has had 16 double-digit scoring games (five 20+ points, one 30+ points) and one double-digit assists game this season.

In March, the Women’s Wooden Award committee will pare the list down to a 15-member voting ballot. A five-member Wooden All-America Team and the Wooden Award winner will be announced April 10.

The Scarlet Knights (11-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) will travel to Coral Gables, FL, to take on No. 17/16 Miami Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2:00 p.m.
