  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – In a closely-contested game that saw 11 lead changes and four ties in the second half, Rutgers (11-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) got by Georgetown (9-8, 3-4 BIG EAST) 67-64 before 4,011 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on Sunday, Jan. 25.

After an offensive rebound by Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN), Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) banked in a jumper from the foul line with 9.6 left on the clock to give the Scarlet Knights a 66-64 advantage. Georgetown called a timeout with 6.5 remaining, but Bethany LeSueur couldn’t handle the inbounds pass following the timeout and the Hoyas were forced to foul Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL). She sank one of two free throws to give Rutgers a three-point advantage (67-64) with less than four seconds on the clock and Georgetown was unable to get off a final shot as time expired.

Neither team was able to build a lead larger than four points in the second half as the two squads answered each other’s baskets all game long. Pondexter led four Scarlet Knights in double figures with 17 points, while Newton was 5-for-5 in the second half to score 10 of her 12 points in the game. Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) led Rutgers in rebounding with eight as the Scarlet Knights held a 33-29 advantage under the boards. Unanimous preseason all-BIG EAST first team selection Rebekkah Brunson led the Hoyas in points (19) and rebounds (10).

RU took control early in the game, building an 11-point (24-13) lead on the strength of Pondexter’s 10 points, but Georgetown clawed back into the contest with a 13-2 run to tie the game at 26-26 with 3:38 to go in the first. The two teams traded baskets, but Rutgers regained the lead (29-28) on a Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) free throw and looked as if it would head to the half on top. After Aquisha Cahoe (Philadelphia, PA) failed to control a rebound under the Georgetown basket, Mary Lisicky hit a jumper with six seconds remaining on the clock that would give the Hoyas a one-point edge at the break.

Rutgers will head to Miami, FL, on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2:00 p.m. to play the No. 18 Hurricanes, who are tied with UConn at 5-1 for the lead in the BIG EAST.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN
Rutgers moves to 11-7 and evens its BIG EAST record at 3-3.

    THE STREAK GOES ON
The Scarlet Knights continue to turn opponents away from the RAC with a loss. RU is now 10-0 at home this season overall and 3-0 in conference play.

    BACK IN THE STARTING LINEUP
Michelle Campbell returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Jan. 9 against Villanova. In 20 minutes of action, she scored 14 points (6-for-7, .857), her fifth double-digit output of the season, and picked up one rebound.

    RETURN TO THE COURT
Nikki Jett, who is averaging 20.7 minutes per game this season, saw action for the first time since Jan. 14 at Syracuse. She scored three points on 1-for-2 (.500) shooting from the floor and 1-for-2 shooting from the line.

    TRAILING AT THE HALF
Not only had the Scarlet Knights won every game at home this season heading into today’s contest with Georgetown, but they had never trailed at the half, until today. Georgetown’s one-point cushion at the break marked the first time in 10 home games that Rutgers has headed to the locker room without the lead.

    REBOUNDING WITH THE BEST
Rutgers continues to show its tenacity under the boards this season. Despite facing the leading rebounder in the conference (Rebekkah Brunson, 11.4 per game) and the second- best rebounding team in the conference (Georgetown, 39.9 per game), the Scarlet Knights held a 33-29 advantage on the boards and outrebounded an opponent for the 13th time in 18 games.

    UP NEXT
The Scarlet Knights will enjoy nearly a week off before heading to Miami, FL, to play the No. 18 Hurricanes, who are tied atop the BIG EAST standings with UConn at 5-1, on Saturday, Jan. 31, at 2:00 p.m.
