  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Playing for the fourth time in eight days with only three healthy players on the bench, Rutgers (10-7, 2-3 BIG EAST) was able to earn its 10th victory of the season in a 64-45 victory over non-conference opponent Temple (8-7, 4-0 Atlantic 10) on Jan. 21 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The game, originally scheduled for Dec. 6, was postponed due to a heavy snowstorm that blanketed the Northeast.

Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) and Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) combined to score 45 of Rutgers’ 64 points and the Scarlet Knights never trailed in the game. Pondexter (23 points) was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line and dished out nine assists, while grabbing five boards. McCullouch, who tied a season high with 22 points, shot 9-for-12 from the field (.750) and 4-for-6 from three-point range (.750). Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) led the way under the boards with nine, all on the defensive end.

Temple was able to pull within eight (33-25) at the beginning of the second half as it applied full-court pressure and forced four Rutgers turnovers, but the Scarlet Knights were able to withstand the press and regain control of the contest as they steadily built their second-half lead to as many as 22 (64-42) points.

Temple had only one player, Candice Dupree, reach double figures (10 points) and the Owls shot only 32.7 (18-55) percent for the game.

RU got out to a quick start in the first half. Following a Temple layup by Dupree to knot the score at 2-2, Rutgers took a 5-2 lead on a McCullouch three-pointer and never trailed again in the half. The Scarlet Knights, keyed by McCullouch’s 10 points, shot 44.0 (11-25) percent from the field and 3-for-3 from downtown to establish a 31-21 lead at the break.

Rutgers will host Georgetown on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 12:00 p.m., in the BIG EAST TV game of the week.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN
Rutgers finishes the non-conference portion of its schedule 8-4 and improves to 10-7 overall.

    THE BEAT GOES ON
Rutgers continues to send its guests home with a notch in the loss column following its victory over Temple this evening. The Scarlet Knights are now 9-0 at home and are winning by an average of 15.5 points in those contests.

    DOING IT WITH D
Rutgers held its opponent under 50 points for the fifth time this season and is holding teams to 48.6 points per game at home.

    CAREER HIGHS
Dawn McCullouch attempted a career-high six three-pointers and connected on four of them to tie her career high in three-pointers made. Cappie Pondexter was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line and, in the process, established a career high in made attempts.

    EARNING HER MINUTES
In her fourth consecutive start, but only her sixth of the season, Aquisha Cahoe has begun to find her niche and help make up for the lack of healthy players on the Rutgers bench. She scored a season-high six points and pulled down six boards in the victory.

    UP NEXT
The Scarlet Knights return to BIG EAST action on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 12:00 p.m. when they host Georgetown.
