  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers (9-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) dominated the boards and held St. John’s (7-8, 1-3 BIG EAST) to its second lowest point total of the season on the way to a convincing 72-47 victory on Saturday at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

The Scarlet Knights opened up the second half with an 8-2 run on the strength of a pair of Courtney Locke (San Marcos, TX) three-pointers to take a 36-25 lead, never looking back as their lead grew as large as 26 (71-45). Michele Campbell (Princeton, NJ) registered her first career double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) and led Rutgers in out-rebounding the Red Storm 41-27, the second-best rebounding team in the conference (41.0 per game).

Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) led the Scarlet Knights in scoring for the third time this season with 17 points on 8-for-14 shooting from the field. Despite being held to just nine points, junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) narrowly missed a triple-double as she chipped in with a career-high 11 assists and a season-high nine rebounds. Locke established a career high with 15 points and shot 3-for-6 (.500) from three-point range.

Kim MacMillan went 4-for-10 from behind the arc and led the Red Storm with 17 points. She was the only member of the team to score in double digits.

Rutgers carried a 28-23 lead into the half despite the fact that leading scorer Pondexter (17.7 ppg) was held scoreless. Trailing 15-11 with 14:35 remaining in the first half, the Scarlet Knights went on a 12-0 run to take a 23-15 lead they would never relinquish. Rebecca Richman’s (Bronx, NY) nine points, including 5-for-5 shooting from the free- throw line, led the way in the half.

The Scarlet Knights hope to carry the momentum on the road as they head to Hartford, CT, to face No. 4/4 Connecticut in a key BIG EAST match-up on Monday, Jan. 19, at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN2.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN
Rutgers evens up its BIG EAST record at 2-2 and moves to 9-6 overall on the season.

    STEPPING IT UP
With leading scorer Cappie Pondexter held to single digits for just the second time this season and the first time since the opening game of the year against Saint Peter’s, several of her teammates stepped in to pick up the slack. Courtney Locke established a career high with 15 points, including a team-high three three-pointers (3-6), and Michelle Campbell established career highs in points (16) and rebounds (11).

    THE STREAKS CONTINUE
The Scarlet Knights kept several streaks alive with the win. They are now 8-0 at home with a 2-0 conference record. RU has now won 11 consecutive games over St. John’s and improved its overall record against the Red Storm to 24-4 (.857) and its home record to 13-1 (.929) against St. John’s.

    FIRST-TIME LINEUP
For the eighth time this season Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer went with a new starting five. The starting lineup of Cappie Pondexter, Courtney Locke, Dawn McCullouch, Aquisha Cahoe and Rebecca Richman took the floor as a starting unit for the first time this season.

    300 AND COUNTING
Today’s victory was the Scarlet Knights’ 300th at the RAC. RU is now 300-67 (.817) all time when playing inside the friendly confines of the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

    DEFENSE AND REBOUNDING WIN GAMES
The 47 points scored by St. John’s marked the fourth time RU has held an opponent under 50 points this season (40 vs. Saint Peters, 11/14/03; 43 vs. Virginia Tech, 1/7/04; 45 vs. Old Dominion 12/28/03), and by out-rebounding the Red Storm 41-27, the undermanned Scarlet Knights were able to win the battle of the boards for the 11th time in 15 games this season.

    UP NEXT
The Scarlet Knights will get right back to action with a trip to Hartford, CT, to play No. 4/4 Connecticut on Monday, Jan. 19, at 2:00 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN2.
