  • SYRACUSE, NY – The Rutgers women’s basketball team (8-6, 1-2 BIG EAST) let a 15-point halftime lead slip away, losing at Syracuse (5-8, 2-1 BIG EAST) 59-57 in overtime Jan. 14.

The game was a tale of two halves, as RU jumped out to an early 17-4 lead and a 33-18 advantage at halftime. The Scarlet Knights shot 44.8 (13-29) percent from the field, including a 5-for-11 (.455) effort from three-point range, and forced nine Syracuse turnovers in the game’s first 20 minutes.

However, the tables were turned in the second half, as the Orangewomen steadily chipped away at the Rutgers lead, cutting the advantage to one (49-48) with 43 seconds on the clock. RU junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) made that lead 51-48 with a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to play in regulation, and Rutgers seemed to catch a break when the Orange missed a three-pointer in the game’s final seconds. However, SU got the rebound and Julie McBride sank the game-tying shot with 4.6 seconds on the clock. Pondexter brought the ball up the length of the court and was fouled at the 0.9 second mark as Rutgers’ bench argued for an intentional foul call, but to no avail. The foul, which was called on the floor, was just the sixth of the half for Syracuse, resulting in an inbounds play instead of game-deciding free throws.

Rutgers scored the first basket of overtime, but the Orangewomen quickly took control. Pondexter’s layup cut the lead to 56-55 with 1:44 to play, but RU found itself having to foul in the game’s closing seconds in order to get the ball back, and SU made of three of its four free throws to secure the victory.

Pondexter finished with a team-high 19 points, adding six rebounds and a game-best six assists. Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) had 11 points, and junior Rebecca Richman (Bronx, BY) tied her career high with 10 tallies.

Rutgers will be back in action Saturday, Jan. 17, at 2:00 p.m. when the Scarlet Knights host St. John’s.
