WASHINGTON, D.C.  (February 27, 2013) –   Washington Mystics General Manager and Head Coach Mike Thibault announced today that the team has acquired former Rutgers standout Kia Vaughn from the New York Liberty.

A 6-4 center, Vaughn was selected by the Liberty in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2009 WNBA Draft and has averaged 5.9 points and 4.0 rebounds in 129 WNBA career games. In 2011, in addition to starting every contest, she set career highs in every category, including 10.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game, on her way to being named the league’s Most Improved Player.

Vaughn assisted the Liberty to three consecutive playoff appearances (2010-2012) and has averaged 6.2 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in post season play.  In postseason play she is averaging 6.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.

Starring for the Scarlet Knights from 2005-09, Vaughn graduated as the program’s all-time leader in games played (135), and was just the fourth player in RU women’s basketball history to compile more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career.

The Bronx, N.Y. finished her four-year stay in Piscataway ranked second all-time in rebounds (1079) and blocked shots (279), was fifth in field goal percentage (.559) and 16thin scoring (1,329 points). While at Rutgers, Vaughn competed on a pair of USA Basketball squads. She helped Team USA win gold at the 2006 FIBA Women’s U20 World Championship and the 2007 FIBA Women’s U21World Championship.
