NEW YORK, N.Y. (February 23, 2013) – The WNBA’s New York Liberty announced today that the team has re-signed former Rutgers women’s basketball standout Essence Carson.
Entering her sixth year in the league, Carson has appeared in 168 career games averaging 8.6 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. A seventh overall pick of the Liberty in 2008, Carson earned her first career WNBA All-Star nomination in 2011. She has made trips to the playoffs in four of the past five seasons, including the Eastern Conference Finals in 2008 and 2010. In 16 playoff games, Carson is averaging 8.9 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest.
Carson played in all 34 games in 2012 for the Liberty, making 23 starts. She was third on the team in scoring with a career-best 11.6 points per game and also averaged career highs in rebounds (3.4) and assists (1.7).
A three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, Carson ranks 20th on the Rutgers all-time scoring list (1,262) and 12th on the rebounding chart (707). She is also third all-time in games played having entered 133 contests as a Scarlet Knight.
