  • VILLANOVA, PA – The Rutgers women’s basketball team (8-5, 1-1 BIG EAST) suffered its first conference loss of the season, falling at Villanova (12-2, 2-1 BIG EAST) 53-49 Jan. 9.

The Wildcats turned a two-point halftime (27-25) lead into a six-point advantage (43-37) with 8:06 to play. However, Rutgers responded with a 7-0 run, taking its first lead of the second half (44-43) with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Villanova hit a three-pointer, followed by a basket by junior Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA), again evening the score (46-46). The two teams traded 1-for-2 trips to the free throw line, making the score 47-47 with 2:22 on the clock. The Wildcats scored the next four points to put themselves ahead 51-47 with 32 seconds to play, but junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) knifed to the basket and scored, pulling Rutgers within two with 20 seconds on the clock. On the inbounds play, Rutgers managed to force a rare Villanova turnover, as senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) came up with the steal and found Pondexter. Pondexter then found an open Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) in the lane, but Hurns’ layup would not fall. Villanova came away with the rebound and Rutgers was forced to foul, giving the Wildcats their final two points from the line with 0.4 second remaining in the game.

Pondexter finished with a game-high 19 points, adding eight rebounds. Newton added 10 tallies, while Hurns led RU in rebounding with nine caroms. Rutgers, playing its third game in six days, had its five-game winning streak snapped by the Wildcats.

The circumstances at the end of the game, but not the ending, were strangely similar to the conclusion of last season’s Rutgers-Villanova contest at The Pavilion, when Hurns put back a blocked shot at the buzzer to lift RU to a 50-49 victory. Rutgers handed Villanova, an eventual Elite Eight participant in the 2003 NCAA Tournament, a pair of one-point losses last season on last-second shots.

Rutgers will be back in action Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 7:00 p.m. when the Scarlet Knights play at Syracuse.
