  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers junior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Jan. 5.

Pondexter, a 5-9 guard, averaged 21.5 points and 6.0 assists in two victories the previous week. She hit a game-winning three-pointer with 5.4 seconds to play to help the Scarlet Knights to a 56-53 victory against No. 18/17 Ohio State Jan. 4, finishing the game with 13 points and five assists. Pondexter scored 30 points on 12-of-15 (.800) shooting and had seven assists in RU’s 77-70 win at Harvard Dec. 30. She shared the Jan. 5 award with Boston College’s Amber Jacobs.

She became the first Scarlet Knight to receive multiple player-of-the-week awards in one season since the 2000-2001 campaign, when Tasha Pointer twice was named the Co-Player of the Week.

Pondexter also shared the weekly award Dec. 15 after averaging 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in a pair of contests against nationally-ranked foes the previous week. In RU’s narrow loss at No. 2/2 Tennessee Dec. 11, she scored 15 points and added five rebounds. In a 73-65 victory against No. 19/19 TCU Dec. 14, she shot 9-for-14 (.643) from the floor and 3-for-5 (.600) from three-point range for a season-high 23 points. Pondexter also added four assists and two steals against the Horned Frogs.

It marked the first player-of-the-week award for Pondexter, who five times earned BIG EAST rookie-of-the-week accolades last season. She was the first Scarlet Knight to be named the BIG EAST Player of the Week since Jan. 15, 2001, when Pointer was recognized. Pondexter shared the award with Villanova’s Liad Suez.

The Scarlet Knights (7-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) begin the BIG EAST Conference season with a second consecutive game against a ranked opponent, hosting No. 16/15 Virginia Tech (12-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) Wednesday, Jan. 7. The game, which will tip off at 7:30 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center (8,000), will be carried on WCTC 1450 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the audio will be available on www.scarletknights.com.
