  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior guard Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) nailed a three-pointer with 5.4 seconds remaining to lift Rutgers (7-4) to a come-from-behind 56-53 victory over No. 18/17 Ohio State (9-3) at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on Sunday. Pondexter scored the game’s final seven points after RU fell behind 53-49 with under three minutes to play.

Pondexter made a three-pointer with 1:09 to play to pull Rutgers win one, 53-52, and Ohio State turned the ball over on the ensuing inbounds pass. Pondexter was then fouled by OSU’s Jessica Davenport with 23 seconds left, but made just one-of-two free throws. Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) tracked down the rebound, setting up Pondexter’s heroics.

Ohio State’s Kim Wilburn was unable to get a shot off in the final five seconds, giving Rutgers its second victory over a Top 25 team. RU also improves to 6-0 on the season at the RAC.

A steal by Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) and lay-up by Newton gave Rutgers a 41-40 lead with 8:50 to play, but the Buckeyes responded with a 6-0 run on a pair of three-pointers to take a 46-41 lead with just under seven minutes to play. Newton’s jumper tied the score at 49 with three minutes left, but OSU responded with a basket by Jessica Davenport to go ahead 51-49. LaToya Turner scored on a put-back for the Buckeyes on their next possession to give OSU a 53-49 lead.

Rutgers pulled ahead late in the first half to take a 27-24 halftime lead behind nine points from Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) and six points by Newton. The first half featured six ties and five lead changes.

Newton finished with a game-high 16 points while Pondexter and Hurns each scored 13. OSU’s LaToya Turner paced the Buckeyes with 15 points and seven rebounds. Rutgers forced Ohio State into a season-high 22 turnovers.

Rutgers returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when it hosts No. 15/16 Virginia Tech in its BIG EAST Conference opener at 7:30 p.m.
