  • CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Rutgers women’s basketball team (6-4) survived a late Crimson rally to earn its first road victory of the season, defeating Harvard (5-5) 77-70 Dec. 30 at Lavietes Pavilion.

Leading by just one (62-61) with 6:23 on the clock, junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) scored Rutgers’ next seven points over a two-minute span, giving RU a 69-63 advantage with 4:26 to play. The Scarlet Knight lead extended to eight (73-65, 2:59), but Harvard ran off five unanswered points to make the score 73-70 in Rutgers’ favor with 1:45 remaining in the game. Again, Pondexter came through for the Knights, making both ends of a one-and-one to make it a two-possession game (75-70) with 31 seconds on the clock. Following a missed Crimson three-pointer, Pondexter again converted a one-and-one for the final 77-70 margin.

Pondexter finished the game with a season-high 30 points, making 12 of 15 (.800) field goals and five of six (.833) free throws. She also added a game-high seven assists to go along with her third career 30-point game. Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) was 9-for-13 (.692) from the floor and perfect from three-point range (2-for-2) for her season-high 22 points, chipping in five rebounds. Redshirt junior Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) rounded out the RU double-digit scorers with 10 points, making every one of her attempts (3-for-3 overall, 2-for-2 from three-point range, 2-for-2 from the free-throw line).

The Scarlet Knights shot 15-for-29 (.517) from the field in the first half, but were even more impressive following halftime when they made 13 of 22 (.591) attempts. RU also shot 93.8 (15-for-16) percent from the charity stripe and scored 20 points off of 18 Harvard turnovers. Both teams also were excellent from beyond the arc, as Rutgers converted six of 12 (.500) attempts and the Crimson shot 10-for-21 (.476).

Rutgers will be back in action Sunday, Jan. 4, at 5:00 p.m. when the Scarlet Knights host No. 18/17 Ohio State.
