NEWTON LEADS FOUR PLAYERS IN DOUBLE FIGURES

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) scored a season-high 19 points to lead four players in double figures as the Rutgers women’s basketball (5-4) team cruised past Old Dominion (6-4), 69-45, on Sunday at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

    The win was the second straight for Rutgers and kept its perfect record at the RAC this season intact (5-0).

    Aside from Newton’s 19 points, Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) added 13 points and seven rebounds. Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) and Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) both scored 12 points. Pondexter added six rebounds and four assists.

    Rutgers was able to build a 35-28 halftime lead despite Pondexter bring held scoreless in the first half for the first time in her career. Pondexter scored her first basket of the game at the 16:58 mark of the second half. Newton and Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) combined for 20 points and five rebounds in the first 20 minutes.

    RU came out of the gates strongly in the second half, scoring 12 of the first 14 points to take a 47-30 lead with 13:17 to play. The lead grew to 20 points, 50-30, with 10:20 left on a pair of free throws by McCullouch. In all, the Scarlet Knights outscored ODU 34-17 in the second half and held the Monarchs to just 17.4 percent (4-24) shooting from the field

    For ODU, leading scorer Shareese Grant was held to just seven points. Monique Coker scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

    Rutgers outrebonded Old Dominion 45-31 and held a 32-15 advantage in free-throw attempts.

    The Scarlet Knights return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 30, when they travel to Boston, MA, for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off against Harvard.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN
    Today’s 69-45 win over Old Dominion improved RU’s record to 5-4 on the season. It is Rutgers’ largest margin of victory this season, eclipsing the 18-point win over Saint Peter’s (58-40, 11/14/03).

    PONDEXTER SCORELESS IN FIRST HALF
    For the first time in her career, junior All-American Cappie Pondexter was held scoreless in the first half. She finished with 12 points.

    HURNS, NEWTON SCORE SEASON-HIGHS
    Shalicia Hurns’ 13-point performance marked a season high. She has scored in double figures in four of the past five games. Chelsea Newton added a season-high 19 points, just four shy of her career high.

    STILL UNBEATEN AT THE RAC
    The Scarlet Knights remain unbeaten at the Louis Brown Athletic Center this season (5-0).

    NEWTON IN DOUBLE FIGURES
    With 19 points against ODU, junior Chelsea Newton has scored in double figures in three of her four games since returning from injury.

    SECOND-HALF SURGE
    Over the first 9:40 of the second half, Rutgers built a 20-point lead, holding Old Dominion to just one field goal while forcing six turnovers.

    DOING IT WITH DEFENSE
    For the second consecutive game, Rutgers put the clamps on defensively, holding an ODU offense that was averaging 70 points per game to just 45 points. Two weeks ago against TCU, the Scarlet Knights held the Horned Frogs to 65 points, 10 below their average. Additionally, Rutgers held ODU to a season-low 17 second-half points. The Scarlet Knights’ previous low came in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT against Saint Peter’s (19 points, 11/14/03).

    CONTAINING GRANT
    Old Dominion’s leading scorer, Shareese Grant, was held to just seven points on 2-of-12 shooting (.167). She entered the contest averaging 17.6 points per game.
