PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 21, 2012) -- Rutgers women’s basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer announced the signing of 2012 Gatorade Arkansas Girls Basketball Player of the Year Tyler Scaife (Little Rock, Ark.) to a national letter of intent to play for the Scarlet Knights beginning next fall.
Scaife, a 5-9 guard, is ranked as the top overall point guard in the nation and ninth-rated recruit overall by ESPNU HoopGulrz. Last season she averaged 25.2 points, 5.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists, and 3.7 steals per game as helped she Hall High School to a 23-6 record and the Class 7A semifinals as a junior.
“Tyler is the purest of point guards,” said Stringer. “She has great depth perception, makes very good decisions, and operates exceptionally well in tight quarters. What makes her better than most is her ability to score at will. She has a solid mid-range game and can stretch any defense with her 3-point shot. Tyler has extraordinary quickness and is the image of the great Rutgers guards we now have in the WNBA.”
Scaife participated at the 2012 USA Basketball trials and Nike Nationals and was a three-time McDonald’s Full Court Award finalist. A unanimous 6A Conference Player of the Year, all-state, and all-conference honoree as a freshman, sophomore, and junior, Scaife is on track to become the most prolific scorer in Arkansas boy’s or girl’s basketball history. She was also a three-time recipient of the Downtown Tip-Off Club Player of the Year award.
“I haven’t seen anyone more anxious to be the best and that separates her from most,” added Stringer. “She has great work ethic, is always putting in the extra time, and she is extremely committed. My assistant coaches do a great job of not only recognizing great talent, but great young women as well. I am honored to have Tyler join our Scarlet Knights Family.”
Scaife’s signing with the Scarlet Knights follows back-to-back Rutgers recruiting classes that were ranked third nationally by ESPNU Hoopgulrz. She joins fellow high profile signees from recent years including current sophomores Briyona Canty (Willingboro, N.J. ), named ESPNU Hoopgurlz’s top guard of 2011, and Syessense Davis (Neptune, N.J.), the 15th ranked combo guard according to ESPNU Hoopgurlz.
