PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers junior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Women’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Dec. 15.
Pondexter, a 5-9 guard, averaged 19.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game in a pair of contests against nationally-ranked foes last week. In RU’s narrow loss at No. 2/2 Tennessee Dec. 11, the All-American scored 15 points and added five rebounds. In a 73-65 victory against No. 19/19 TCU Dec. 14, she shot 9-for-14 (.643) from the floor and 3-for-5 (.600) from three-point range for a season-high 23 points. Pondexter also added four assists and two steals against the Horned Frogs.
This marks the first player-of-the-week award for Pondexter, who five times earned BIG EAST rookie-of-the-week accolades last season. She is the first Scarlet Knight to be named the BIG EAST Player of the Week since Jan. 15, 2001, when Tasha Pointer was recognized. Pondexter shares this week’s award with Villanova’s Liad Suez.
The No. 25 Scarlet Knights will enjoy an extended break for final exams and the holidays, returning to action Sunday, Dec. 28, when Rutgers hosts Old Dominion at 3:00 p.m.
