  • KNOXVILLE, TN – The No. 25 Scarlet Knights (3-4) put a major scare into No. 2/2 Tennessee (4-0), leading with less than seven minutes to play in the game, but weren’t able to hold on in a 59-49 loss in Knoxville Dec. 11.

The game see-sawed back and forth in the first half, as the contest took on the feel of a postseason game with each possession becoming more and more important. RU led by as many as four (13-9, 11:32), and a Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) layin at the buzzer gave Rutgers a 27-25 halftime advantage. Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) led all scorers with 13 first-half points, shooting 6-for-8 (.750) from the field.

Tennessee momentarily took a 31-29 lead two minutes into the second half, but the Knights scored six of the next seven points for its biggest advantage of the game (40-34) with 11:41 on the clock. The two teams again traded baskets, and at the 6:28 mark RU led 48-47. That would be the Knights’ last lead of the night, as the Lady Vols went on a 11-0 run to put the game out of reach.

McCullouch led Rutgers with her 19 tallies. Junior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) added 15 points, and Richman added a team-high nine rebounds.

The RU-UT game marked the Knights’ fourth consecutive road game, and three of those match-ups were against nationally-ranked clubs. During a 22-day span, Rutgers traveled 9,500 miles, spending 13 days on the road in a total of seven cities, five states and two time zones. To make matters worse, RU was shorthanded during the stretch, suiting up eight players at No. 7/5 Texas Tech Nov. 23, nine at Clemson Nov. 20 and at Tennessee, and 10 at No. 18/21 LSU Dec. 2.

The Scarlet Knights will play their first home game in nearly a month when RU faces No. 19/19 TCU on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 1:00 p.m.
