  • BATON ROUGE, LA – Playing its third-straight game on the road, two of them against nationally-ranked opponents, the Rutgers women’s basketball team (3-3) fell to #18/21 LSU, 78-68, Tuesday night at the Maravich Center in Baton Rouge, LA. LSU led the entire game, although Rutgers cut the lead to three points early in the second half. The Scarlet Knights shot just 35% from the floor (27% in the first half) and 17% from three-point range in dropping its third-straight game.

The Lady Tigers used a 7-0 run midway through the first half to build a 12-point lead, 16-4, on a jumper by Tillie Willis and kept the Scarlet Knights at bay over the next eight minutes before a Chelsea Newton lay-up cut the lead to five, 27-22, with 1:36 remaining. Rutgers, on a 7-0 run of its own at that point, took advantage of a three-point play and, on the ensuing possession, a lay-up by Rebecca Richman to slice into the lead. LSU, however, grew its lead back to nine before another field goal from Newton at the buzzer cut it to seven, 31-24, at the intermission.

At the start of the second half, Rutgers used a jumper by Cappie Pondexter and a layup from Shalicia Hurns to cut the lead to three, 31-28. LSU called a quick timeout and, after exchanging baskets, built its lead to 10, 40-30, on a three-pointer from Doneka Hodges at the 17:04 mark. Rutgers responded with a 5-0 run on a three-pointer from Pondexter and a pair of free throws by Newton, but the Tigers went on a 19-8 run over the next minutes to seal the win, building its biggest lead of the game (15 points) with 6:19 left following a fastbreak lay-up by Hodges.

Pondexter led Rutgers with 22 points, hitting 8-of-22 shots, while grabbing eight rebounds. In her first game of the season, Newton returned to her home state and scored 12, while Hurns added 11 on 5-of-9 shooting to round out the double-digit scorers. Hurns also grabbed a team and game-high 10 rebounds.

Hodges led LSU with 23 points, while Willis had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Tigers (3-2), who emerged victorious in the their home opener.

Rutgers will return to the RAC, where it owns a 3-0 record this season, on Saturday, when it hosts Temple and its head coach, Dawn Staley, at 2:00 p.m.
