  • CLEMSON, SC – The No. 15/15 Rutgers women’s basketball team (3-2) fell behind early and was never able to gain total control of the game, losing 69-64 at Clemson (3-1) Nov. 30.

Rutgers scored the game’s first basket, but did not lead again until the 3:11 mark (18-17) of the first half, and went into the locker room trailing 27-21. The Lady Tigers’ lead stretched to 51-40 with less than 10 minutes to play in the game, but RU quickly put together a 12-2 run to pull within one (53-52) with 5:02 on the clock. Just as Rutgers looked like it was going to take over the game, Clemson scored eight unanswered points, and the Knights never got the margin to less than five the rest of the way as the Lady Tigers scored their final 11 points at the free-throw line.

Junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) scored a season-high 22 points on 8-for-14 (.571) shooting, tied her career high with four steals, and collected five rebounds and five assists. Senior guard Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) added a season-best 17 points, making seven of 11 (.636) field goals. Senior forward Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN), making her return to the court after missing RU’s last two games due to an injury, notched 10 tallies and a career-high 13 rebounds for her fourth career double-double.

Despite a 38-35 advantage on the boards and a 36-24 scoring edge in the paint, Rutgers was unable to defeat Clemson, as the Knights were undone by their turnovers (20) and free-throw shooting (12-21; .571). Depth also was an issue for RU, as the Knights suited up just nine players due to injuries.

Rutgers will finish its two-game road trip Tuesday, Dec. 2, at No. 18/21 LSU. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m. CT (8:00 p.m. ET), and the game will be carried live on WRSU 88.7 FM.
