  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Five different Scarlet Knights scored in doubles figures as the No. 15/15 Rutgers women’s basketball team (3-0) advanced to the final of the Preseason WNIT with a 65-50 win over Michigan (2-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

With the win, Rutgers will face the winner of tomorrow’s Texas Tech/UC-Santa Barbara semifinal game at 1:30 p.m. eastern on Sunday, Nov. 23 in the final. The game will be broadcast live locally on the Madison Square Network.

Junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) had 16 points on 7-for-14 (.500) shooting. Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) added 14 points, while redshirt junior Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) had 10 points and junior center Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) had the first double-double of her career with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

For the second straight game, the Scarlet Knights came out of the gates quickly, beginning putting together a 21-4 run over the first 11 minutes of regulation. During the run, sophomore forward Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) had seven points and three rebounds as the Scarlet Knights limited Michigan to 2-for-9 shooting (.222).

Rutgers took a 30-22 lead at halftime behind nine points from Campbell and seven off the bench from Richman. RU’s trio of post players – Campbell, Richman and sophomore forward Aquisha Cahoe (Philadelphia, PA) – combined to score 16 of Rutgers’ 30 points, grab 12 rebounds and shoot 7-for-9 (.778) from the floor in the first half.

Pondexter began to heat up in the second half, scoring 12 points in the first 10 minutes to give RU a 50-35 advantage. Rutgers was never seriously threatened again and made 5-of-7 (.714) free throws in the final 1:32 of regulation to ice the game.

A stifling Rutgers defense held Michigan leading scorer Stephanie Gandy, who entered the game averaging 23 points, to just nine – all in the first half. Gandy shot just 3-for-11 from the floor in 36 minutes. The Wolverines shot just 28.6 (8-28) percent from the floor in the second half.
