  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, Il) collected a game-high 21 points and eight assists to lead the No. 16/17 Rutgers women’s basketball team (2-0) to a 65-50 victory against Ole Miss (1-1) in the Preseason WNIT’s second round at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, NJ, on Nov. 16. With the victory, the Scarlet Knights advance to the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT, where they will face the winner of tomorrow’s Michigan-Cincinnati game. The semifinal game will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m., at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

Rutgers controlled the game from the tip off, opening the contest on a 13-2 run, capped by a Pondexter three-pointer just under nine minutes into the game. Pondexter registered eight points during the run, including two threes.

The Scarlet Knights’ aggressive defense forced Ole Miss into four turnovers in its first five possessions, holding the Lady Rebels without a field goal for the first nine minutes of the contest.

Pondexter sunk her third trifecta of the half with a little over seven minutes remaining in the period to give the Scarlet Knights a 21-6 edge over the Rebels.

Pondexter finished the game 4-for-7 (.571) from behind the arc, while also recording two steals in the contest.

Ole Miss chipped away at the RU lead with a 17-6 run in the waning moments of the first period to pull within three points at 27-24. Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) converted a pair of free throws to give Rutgers a 29-24 lead at the break.

After the Rebels pulled within six points (38-32, 15:30) of the Scarlet Knights in the second half, Pondexter once again stepped up to the challenge with her fourth three-pointer of the game, sparking a 7-0 run to give RU a 45-32 lead with just over 11 minutes remaining. Rutgers never looked back, cruising to a 65-50 victory over the Lady Rebels.

Sophomore Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) tallied 10 points and eight rebounds for Rutgers, while redshirt junior Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) chipped in nine.

    Postgame Notes

    FIRST START FOR LOCKE
Sophomore guard Courtney Locke (San Marcos, TX) made her first career start today in her 28th career appearance. She collected eight points, two assists and a career-high tying three rebounds and two steals.

    RUTGERS’ DEFENSE SETS THE STAGE
Rutgers’ defense set the tone early today, forcing Ole Miss turnovers in four of the Lady Rebels’ first five possessions. Ole Miss didn’t convert its first field goal until the 10:17 mark of the first half, making the score 14-6. For the game, RU scored 17 points off 23 Lady Rebel turnovers, outrebounded Ole Miss 38-34, and held the Lady Rebels to 30.2 (16-53) percent shooting from the field.

PONDEXTER NEARLY SECURES FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE OF YEAR
Junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) nearly produced her first double-double of the 2003-2004 season, posting team highs of 21 points and eight assists.

RUTGERS TO PLAY AGAIN NOV. 19th
With the win, the Scarlet Knights advance to the Preseason WNIT semifinals Wednesday, Nov. 19. The game will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. Rutgers will face the winner of the Michigan-Cincinnati second-round game, which will be played Monday, Nov. 17, in Ann Arbor at 7:00 p.m.

    KNIGHTS ACCURATE FROM DOWNTOWN
Rutgers shot 50.0 (6-12) percent from three-point range. That number is impressive by itself, but is especially so considering that the new distance of 20-6.25 is being used for all Preseason WNIT games.
