RU Women's Basketball Defeats St. Peter's, 58-40, to Advance in Preseason WNIT

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Senior guard Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) scored a team-high 13 points as a stifling Rutgers (1-0) defense held Saint Peter’s (0-1) to just 32.7 (16-49) percent shooting in a 58-40 victory in the opening round of the Preseason WNIT on Friday, Nov. 14 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

    Rutgers advances to the second round and will host the winner of the Ole Miss/Jackson State game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16.

    RU jumped out to an 11-4 lead early in the first half, as junior Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) and sophomore Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) combined for eight points. Campbell finished with 10 points and seven rebounds in 31 minutes. Rutgers ended the first half with an 11-3 run to take a 36-21 advantage into the locker room.

    Rutgers opened its largest lead of the game, 44-24, on a three-pointer from freshman Natisha Johnson (Gibsland, LA) at the 12:13 mark of the second half. Johnson finished with five points in her collegiate debut. The Scarlet Knights held Saint Peter’s to just 27.6 percent (8-29) shooting in the second half.

    Saint Peter’s’ Tanesha Seaton was the only Peahen to score in double figures (10 points), but was held to just four points in the second half.

    For Rutgers, senior Shalicia Hurns (Indianapolis, IN) had eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

    The win marked the 675th in the career of head coach C. Vivian Stringer, making her the fourth coach to reach the milestone. The win also was the 600th in the 30-year history of the Rutgers program.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    WITH THE WIN…
    Rutgers snaps a two-year losing streak in home openers with tonight’s 58-40 victory over Saint Peter’s. RU is now 22-8 (.733) all time in season openers. The Scarlet Knights are 27-3 (.900) all time when making their first home appearance of the season and have won their last seven home openers.

    When beginning the season with a home game, Rutgers is 14-1 all time. RU’s last season-opening home game was Nov. 17, 2000, against California, a 66-47 win.

    IN WNIT…
    Rutgers is now 4-2 (.667) all time in Preseason WNIT action. RU appeared in the first-ever WNIT, losing to visiting Seton Hall, 66-64. In 1998, the Scarlet Knights advanced to the championship game.

    STRINGER WINS NO. 675…
    Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer earned her 675th career victory tonight. She is the forth coach to win 675 games, trailing Tennessee’s Pat Summitt (821-163), Texas’ Jody Conradt (817-264) and LSU’s Sue Gunter (678-299).

    JOHNSON’S DEBUT…
    The only newcomer on Rutgers’ roster, freshman Natisha Johnson (Gibsland, LA) played 23 minutes and scored five points on 2-for-6 (.333) shooting. Johnson’s first collegiate basket came at the 12:13 mark of the first half on a three-pointer.
