  • PISCATAWAY, NJ – Senior Dawn McCullouch (Long Beach, CA) scored 19 points and began a 10-0 Rutgers run to end regulation as the Scarlet Knight women’s basketball team opened their exhibition season with a 69-60 victory over the Turkish National Team Monday, Nov. 3, at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.

    McCullouch gave Rutgers a 62-60 lead with 1:40 remaining in the second half on a three-pointer, and then added two free throws in the final seconds to give the Scarlet Knights their final nine-point margin of victory. McCullouch also added five rebounds and three assists.

    Rutgers led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but Turkey chipped away at the lead and went ahead 52-50 with 7:42 to play. Turkey led by four points, 56-52, before Rutgers scored 17 of the game’s final 21 points.

    Sophomore forward Aquisha Cahoe (Philadelphia, PA) had 11 points and eight rebounds, while junior All-American Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) added 10 points and a game-high five assists. Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. Rutgers shot 51.9 percent (14-27) in the second half after connecting on just 37.5 percent (12-32) of its shots in the first half.

    The Scarlet Knights used a 9-2 run in the first half to take a 32-24 lead on a three-point field goal by Nikki Jett (Columbia, SC) with 3:39 to play as RU took a 34-28 lead into halftime.

    For Turkey, Yesemin Horasan had 16 points and five rebounds on 6-of-9 (.667) shooting.

    Rutgers finishes its exhibition schedule on Sunday, Nov. 9, against the NWBL Elite at 2:00 p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The 2003-04 season officially gets underway on Friday, Nov. 14, when RU hosts St. Peter’s in the first round of the Preseason WNIT.
