Junior midfielder Josh Gros (Mechanicsburg, PA) opened the scoring, taking a pass up the sideline from sophomore back Rory Fitzgerald (Middletown, NJ) and punching it past the goalkeeper for the score in the 13th minute.
Rutgers took the 1-0 lead into halftime. The Knights and Spiders played a scoreless second period until junior forward Sherif El Bialy (Cairo, Egypt) sent a rocket from 22 yards outside the penalty area past Richmond goalkeeper Jacob Hofmeister in the 60th minute, propelling Rutgers to the final two-goal advantage.
Senior goalkeeper Ricky Zinter (Penfield, NY) started the contest, notching one save for the Scarlet Knights. Junior keeper Scott Conway (Aston, PA) played the entire second period between the posts, also recording a single save. Richmond goalkeeper Mike Nwaneri collected two saves in the second half of play while Hofmeister registered four saves in the first period.
Rutgers plays its second and final exhibition match Sunday, Aug. 25, against Massachusetts at 7:00 p.m. The Scarlet Knights open the regular season at No. 1 Indiana on Friday, Aug. 30, as part of the adidas/Indiana Tournament.
