PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers freshman guard Mike Rosario (Jersey City, N.J.) has been named to the 2009 CollegeInsider.com Freshmen All-America team. A member of the BIG EAST Conference All-Rookie team, he placed fifth nationally among freshmen in scoring, averaging 16.2 points-per-game.
Rosario set the Rutgers freshman all-time scoring mark with 517 points, surpassing all-time leading scorer Phil Sellers, who posted 506 points as a freshman in 1972-73. In eight contests against nationally-ranked foes, Rosario averaged 18.9 points-per-game. He placed second in the BIG EAST in free throw percentage (83.9 percent, 73-87) and scored in double figures in 28 of 32 contests. Twice named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week, Rosario led all Conference newcomers in scoring, free throw percentage, three point field goals made and minutes played.
Three BIG EAST players were recognized on the team. Georgetown’s Greg Monroe and Connecticut’s Kemba Walker were also selected.
The first McDonald’s All-American in the history of the Rutgers men’s basketball program, Rosario arrived “On the Banks” after helping Saint Anthony to a high school national championship in 2008 under head coach Bob Hurley, Sr.
