TAMPA, Fla. - The Rutgers men's basketball team dropped a 62-40 BIG EAST contest to South Florida on Jan. 24 at the Sun Dome.
Sophomore forward JR Inman (Pomona, N.Y.) and junior forward Ollie Bailey (Chicago, Ill.) led the Scarlet Knights with 10 points apiece. Inman grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, while Bailey added seven boards off the bench. Freshman center Hamady N'diaye (Dakar, Senegal) came in and grabbed six rebounds for Rutgers, including five on the offensive end.
With the loss, the Scarlet Knights fall to 8-12 on the season, 1-6 in the BIG EAST. USF took an early eight-point lead (17-9) with 13:12 showing, when Melvin Buckley hit a triple.
The Bulls continued to heat up from the floor, finishing the opening half with a 15-of-24 performance (62.5 percent), including nailing 5-of-8 three-pointers. The Scarlet Knights connected on seven field goals in the first half, and were only 1-of-6 from behind the three-point arc.
South Florida used a 21-7 scoring spree over the final 11:30 of the first half to take a 38-18 advantage at the break.
In the second, RU was unable to close the gap to anything less than 19 points as both teams continued to trade baskets down the stretch.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2:00 p.m., when they host instate rival Seton Hall at the RAC. It is the second meeting this season between the two schools with the Pirates earning a 77-72 victory in the previous match-up earlier this month at the Continental Airlines Arena.
