  • PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh, the BIG EAST'S top defensive team, held Rutgers to 14 points in the first half and the No. 9 Panthers cruised to an 86-65 victory Saturday night.

Pitt (19-4, 9-3) moved into a three-way tie with Notre Dame and Syracuse for the Big East West Division lead by winning its 20th consecutive home game.

No Panthers player reached double figures until Julius Page hit 11 points with 11:13 remaining, yet Pitt already had opened leads of as many as 24 points.

Ontario Lett finished with 13 points and combined with Chevy Troutman to shut down Rutgers inside, allowing the Panthers to put the game away in a hurry as they surged to leads of 16-6 and 23-9.

Usually limiting the Scarlet Knights (11-13, 3-9) to one shot per possession - and, often not a good one - the Panthers held Rutgers to 21.7 percent shooting in the first half and 36.1 percent overall.

Rutgers, last in the division and in danger of missing the Big East tournament, also had some other unenviable statistics at halftime: 13 turnovers and no assists. The Knights finished with 18 turnovers and five assists.

Pitt had five double-figure scorers, with Jaron Brown getting 12, Page and Carl Krauser 11 each and Troutman scoring 10.

Pitt didn't let up until midway through the second half in its second consecutive easy home win, surging to a 42-18 lead. The Panthers beat West Virginia 82-46 on Feb. 12 before winning at Georgetown 82-67 on Tuesday.

Calvin Wooten scored 21 and Herve Lamizana had 17, but Rutgers still lost its third in a row and 10th in 13 games.

Pitt came in allowing a league-low 59.1 points and Rutgers was averaging a league-worst 67.3 points, so it was predictable the Knights would have trouble opening up their offense until the game was long since decided.

It also didn't matter that Pitt point guard Brandin Knight, coming off a season-high 23 points against Georgetown, again wasn't much of a factor offensively with six points. The Big East's preseason player of the year, Knight came in averaging 9.7 points, the lowest average among Pitt's top six players.
