The Scarlet Knights (9-9, 1-5 Big East) snapped a six-game losing streak and became the final Big East team to win a conference game.
Syracuse (13-3, 4-2) lost in its first game as a ranked team this season, and for the fourth time in its last five at Rutgers.
Syracuse did not call timeout after Lamizana's basket, and Carmelo Anthony's jumper inside the 3-point line missed badly. The ball was rebounded by Rutgers as time ran out.
After shooting 2-for-9 in the first half, Coleman finished 12-for-23 and became the first Rutgers player with consecutive 30-point games since Eric Riggins in 1987. Coleman scored 30 at West Virginia on Sunday.
Coleman had 13 points in an 18-4 run that gave Rutgers a 49-37 advantage. Syracuse rallied for a 56-53 lead, and led 60-58 with 4:24 remaining.
Coleman's layup tied it and started Rutgers on a 7-0 run, but Syracuse responded with seven straight points _ capped by Hakim Warrick's baby hook shot to tie it with 48.2 seconds left. Rutgers then held the ball before Mike Sherrod kicked a pass out to Lamizana, who hit from the left of the key.
Ricky Shields had 14 points and six assists for Rutgers, while Lamizana had 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Anthony, held to two first-half points, finished with 17, while Gerry McNamara added 12 and Jeremy McNeil had 10 points and seven blocks. Warrick had 11 rebounds for the Orangemen, who committed 17 turnovers.
Rutgers won despite shooting 34.7 percent and being outrebounded 47-43.
Neither team could take control in a sloppy first half, and Rutgers' 27-21 advantage was wiped out by Syracuse's 6-0 run to end the half. Rutgers shot 26.3 percent in the half, while the Orangemen committed 12 turnovers.
