The Mountaineers, coming off a 65-61 win Wednesday over intrastate rival Marshall, committed eight turnovers and made 31-of-54 field goal attempts for the game.
Rutgers, which lost its sixth-straight game, committed 17 turnovers and never got close to West Virginia, despite a team-high 30 points from leading scorer Jerome Coleman.
West Virginia (11-6, 2-3 Big East), held a 49-36 halftime advantage and never allowed Rutgers (8-9, 0-5) to within 10 after the break.
In the second half, the Scarlet Knights tried to get back in the game by throwing various defensive looks at the Mountaineers, including a two-three zone and a full court press. The Mountaineers were unfazed and went the opening 9:29 of the second half without committing a turnover.
A Pittsnogle 3-pointer with 6:30 remaining gave West Virginia a 21 point lead -- its largest of the game.
Rutgers would not go quietly, and began cutting into the West Virginia lead. Coleman scored 12 points down the stretch, including a 3-pointer with 55 seconds remaining that brought Rutgers to within 10 at 85-75.
West Virginia broke the Rutgers press on the next offensive possession, and Patrick Beilein made 1-of-2 free throws to seal the victory for West Virginia.
Tyrone Sally added 11 points for the Mountaineers.
Ricky Shields had 11 points and Mike Sherrod had 10 for Rutgers.
