MISSION STATEMENT
Georgetown (10-4, 2-2 Big East) held the Scarlet Knights (8-8, 0-4) to just 31 percent shooting from the floor, and to just one field goal during a nine-minute stretch late in the second half.
Jerome Coleman scored 18 points to lead Rutgers, which has now lost five straight. With Miami's win over Connecticut Monday night, it is also the only team in the Big East without a conference win.
Georgetown, which led by as many as 13 in the second half, watched an early 11-point second half lead disappear when Calvin Wooten put Rutgers ahead 51-50 midway through the half.
But the Hoyas took over from there, outscoring Rutgers 20-6 over the next eight minutes, aided by a technical foul on Rutgers coach Gary Waters with 3:33 to play.
The lack of a late Rutgers comeback was a welcome change for the Hoyas, who saw a 16-point lead with seven minutes to play turn into a five-point loss on Saturday against St. John's.
The Scarlet Knights tried to answer Sweetney, who also had 13 rebounds, from the outside. However, they shot just 6-for-29 from 3-point range.
Georgetown led 33-28 at halftime after holding the Scarlet Knights to just 26 percent from the floor, marking the third time this season Rutgers has shot less than 30 percent in a first half.
Sweetney and Tony Bethel, who finished with 20, each scored 12 in the first half for Georgetown.
