Coleman Lifts Rutgers Past Fordham, 94-83

  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Jerome Coleman scored a career-high 34 points and Rutgers had its highest scoring night in four years in a 94-83 win over Fordham.

    Ricky Shields added 12 points and seven rebounds for Rutgers while the Knights' freshman trio of Calvin Wooten, Adrian Hill and Cortez Davis combined for 25 points.

    Mike Sherrod had eight assists, eight rebounds and three steals for Rutgers, which held a 50-29 rebounding advantage.

    Michael Haynes had 21 points for Fordham, Mark Jarrell-Wright had 17, Drew Williamson 15 and Glenn Batemon had 12. Rutgers never trailed in the game and the Knights opened a 35-18 advantage with 7:17 left in the half.

    The Rams scored seven straight to cut the deficit to 41-32, but after a time out, Rutgers responded with nine straight to go into halftime with a 51-32 advantage. Rutgers opened its largest lead at 65-39 with 15:46 remaining.

    Although the Scarlet Knights never appeared to be in danger, Fordham got to within 13 on a Haynes three-pointer with 3:02 remaining. Fordham shot just 29 percent with nine turnovers in the first half, and was 7-for-16 from the foul line.

    Rutgers hit 50 percent as Coleman shot 8-for-15 for 22 points.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    With the Win:
    Rutgers is now 4-2 after defeating Fordham 94-83. The Scarlet Knights have won eight of the last nine meetings in the series, and are 25-27 all-time against the Rams. The Scarlet Knights also improve to 173-162 all-time against the Atlantic-10 Conference.

    Non-Conference Record
    With the win against Fordham, Rutgers is now 11-1 at home against non-conference competition, and 14-7 overall against non-conference foes in the Gary Waters era.

    Season High Point Total
    The 94 points scored against Fordham is the most scored in the Gary Waters era. Rutgers previous best under Waters was an 89 point performance against Georgetown (1/5/02) last season. It was the most points scored by RU since posting 97 against in a 97-87 win against Villanova on January 1, 1999.

    Coleman, BIG EAST Season High and Career High for Points in a Game
    The 34 points scored by Jerome Coleman set a season high for points in a single game by a BIG EAST player. The previous best in the conference was Drew Schifino of West Virginia, who notched 33 points against Duquesne earlier this season. Coleman’s previous best was 30 points against Miami (2/17/02) last season. It was the most scored by a Rutgers player since Todd Billet scored 37 against James Madison on December 2, 2000. It was the second time Coleman reached at least 30 points in a game and the ninth time Coleman has tallied at least 25 points in a game for Rutgers.

    Coleman, Career-High, Field Goals Made and Attempted
    Coleman’s 12-for-22 outing from the field set career highs in both categories. His previous bests were 10 field goals made (twice) and 19 attempts (twice).

    Coleman’s 22 Points in the First Half Ties Personal Best
    With 22 points in the first half against Fordham, Jerome Coleman tied his personal best for points in a single half for the second time this season. He scored 22 in the opening 20 minutes against Marshall (12/2) earlier this season. Last year, he also scored 22 points in the second half against Syracuse (2/2/02) at the RAC.

    Freshman Scoring
    Freshmen Calvin Wooten, Adrian Hill and Cortez Davis all set career-highs for points in a game against Fordham. Wooten tied a career-high with nine points (also scored nine against Columbia on 11/18/02), Hill recorded eight points (previous best was three versus Marshall (12/2/02) and Davis finished with eight points (previous high was six versus Marshall, 12/2/02).

    Team Season High For Blocked Shots
    With 11 blocked shots tonight, Rutgers set a season-high for blocked shots in a single game, surpassing the previous number of seven, against Marshall (12/2) earlier this season. It was the highest amount of rejections for RU since posting 12 against Saint Peters (12/11/02) last season.

    Season High Rebounding
    Rutgers’ 50 rebounds against Fordham were the most this season by the Scarlet Knights. The previous high was 41 against Temple (11/24/02). It was the most rebounds for the Scarlet Knights since the Stony Brook (11/28/01) game last season, when RU pulled down 54 rebounds.

    Career-High Points for McCoy
    With seven points against Fordham, Jason McCoy set a career-high for points in a game, surpassing his previous high of five, accomplished against Fairleigh Dickinson (11/16/01) and Syracuse (1/2/02) last season.

    51 First Half Points
    The 51 points scored by Rutgers in the first half against Fordham were the most scored in a first half by RU in the Gary Waters era, surpassing the 49 points the scored in the first half against Marshall (12/2) earlier this season. It was the second-most scored in any half under Waters, as the Knights scored 54 points in the second half against Syracuse (2/2/02) last season. It was also the most points scored by Rutgers in the first half of a game since Dec. 3, 1998, when RU posted 54 points in the opening 20 minutes against Columbia.
