Rutgers Drops 66-56 Decision to Notre Dame

  • SOUTH BEND, IN – Sophomore guard Quincy Douby scored a game-high 19 points, but Notre Dame (17-9, 9-6 BIG EAST) pulled away late for a hard-fought 66-56 over Rutgers (9-17, 2-13 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night at the Joyce Center in South Bend, IN.

    Notre Dame’s backcourt of Collin Falls, Chris Quinn and Chris Thomas combined to score 42 of the Irish’s 66 points. ND shot a season-best 53 percent from the floor, but couldn’t shake the Scarlet Knights until an 11-6 spurt to open a 62-53 lead when Thomas hit a pair of free throws with 51 seconds left.

    The Scarlet Knights stayed in the game through second-chance points, outscoring the Irish 18-8 in that category. Rutgers outrebounded the Irish 37-30, the eighth time this season the Scarlet Knights have outrebounded an opponent.

    Douby scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half while Jimmie Inglis had 12 points and Marquis Webb added 10. Byron Joynes had career-high 15 rebounds.

    After Douby scored the first basket of the second half to give the Scarlet Knights a 31-30 lead, the Irish answered with an 8-0 run during which Quinn scored six points. The Irish led the rest of the way.

    Despite outshooting the Scarlet Knights 52 percent to 28 percent in the first half, the Irish led only 30-29 at halftime. Rutgers stayed close by outrebounding the Irish 19-14 and by shooting 10-of-13 from the free-throw line while the Irish shot just 5-of-7.

    Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, March 5, when it hosts fifth-ranked Boston College at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the Scarlet Knights will honor seniors Ricky Shields and Juel Wiggan prior to the game.

    JOYNES GARNERS CAREEER HIGH IN REBOUNDS
    Sophomore center Byron Joynes registered a career-high 15 rebounds vs. Notre Dame. The 15-rebound effort eclipsed his previous career high of 12 rebounds at Boston College on Feb. 16. In BIG EAST games, the 6-9, 265-pound Joynes is averaging a team-best 6.4 rebounds per game. He is also No. 1 on the team in overall rebounding with a 5.3 average. Joynes has garnered three double-digit rebound games this season, as he had 11 boards at St. John’s on Feb. 2, to along with the 12 at BC and the 15 at Notre Dame.

    INGLIS CAREER-HIGH 12 POINTS
    Junior center Jimmie Inglis recorded a career-high 12 points at Notre Dame. In a productive 21-minute stint off the bench, Inglis was 3-of-4 from the field, 6-of-8 from the free throw line and added six rebounds to along with his 12 points. The 6-9, 260-pound Inglis had previously recorded a career-high 10 points three times (vs. Fairleigh Dickinson, Villanova and Arkansas –Monticello). In his last four games, Inglis is averaging 8.8 points per game.

    TWO-HEADED CENTER COMBO PRODUCTIVE
    In 46 combined minutes of action vs. Notre Dame, and on the floor at the same time for long stretches of the game, Byron Joynes and Jimmie Inglis combined for 16 points and 21 rebounds vs. the Fighting Irish.

    Sophomore guard Quincy Douby is averaging 21.0 points, is 14-of-29 (.483) from three-point range his last three games. For the season, Douby leads the Scarlet Knights in scoring with a 15.1 average.

    DOUBY FROM THE FREE THROW LINE
    Sophomore Quincy Douby has been just about automatic from three free throw line since BIG EAST play began. Douby shot .826 from the line last season but struggled early this season from the charity stripe. But in conference play, Douby has converted 33-of-37 (.892) from the free throw line. For the season, Douby is hitting .771 from the charity stripe.

    CRASHING THE BOARDS
    Rutgers out-rebounded Notre Dame 37-30, including a commanding 19-5 advantage on the offensive glass. Byron Joynes led the way with six offensive boards while Jimmie Inglis and Juel Wiggan added four and three offensive rebounds, respectively.
