  • MORGANTOWN, WV - Kevin Pittsnogle scored 14 points as West Virginia defeated Rutgers, 76-58, on Saturday in front of 12,004 fans on Senior Day at the WVU Coliseum.

Patrick Beilein scored 12 points and Tyrone Sally and Joe Herber each added 11 for West Virginia. Sally became the 41st player in school history with 1,000 points.

The Rutgers backcourt combination of sophomore guard Quincy Douby and senior guard Ricky Shields led Rutgers with 18 and 14 points, respectively. The due combined to shoot 6-of-11 from three-point range with Douby going 4-of-8 and Shields hitting on 2-of-5. Scarlet Knight sophomore center Byron Joynes added eight points and five rebounds and tied his career high with three blocked shots.

The Mountaineers (18-8, 8-7 Big East), won their fourth straight and sixth in seven tries. West Virginia, 12-7 at one point, now has the most wins since its previous NCAA appearance in 1998.

Rutgers used 10 players in the first half and did an effective job executing pressure man-to-man defense that resulted in an uncharacteristic nine first half turnovers by the usually efficient Mountaineers. But Rutgers could only manage two points off of those turnovers and was 0-for-2 from the free hrow line as WVU seized a 37-28 halftime lead. West Virginia made 15-of-26 field goals and seven of 11 3-pointers. The 3-point barrage helped WVU take a 28-18 lead with 7:12 left in the first half.

The first half was a free-flowing affair with the teams combining for just seven fouls (five by Rutgers, two by WVU). But the pace of the game slowed in the second half as West Virginia, which did not attempt a single free throw in the first half, went 18-of-22 from the line in the second half to pull away for the win. The Scarlet Knights (9-16, 2-12) got no closer than six points the rest of the way in losing for the ninth time in 11 games.

With one regular-season game left, the Mountaineers set a school single-season record with 664 3-point attempts, eight more than the mark set last year.

West Virginia's D'or Fischer had two blocked shots to give him 180 for the season, breaking the mark of 178 held by Phil Wilson. Fischer's 382 career blocks rank 18th in NCAA history.
