Douby Shoots Rutgers Past UAM, 83-74

  • PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Sophomore guard Quincy Douby poured in a season-high 26 points, dished out five assists, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots to pace Rutgers to an 83-74 victory over Division II Arkansas-Monticello Wednesday night. Douby’s night was highlighted by tying a Rutgers school record by nailing eight three-point jump shots. On the evening, Douby was 8-for-14 from three-point range and was 9-for-15 overall from the field.

    Senior guard Ricky Shields added 13 points and five assists while junior reserve center Jimmie Inglis tied his career high with 10 points for Rutgers (9-15), which snapped a three-game losing streak. The Scarlet Knights held a 77-61 lead with 1:51 left to play before RU head coach Gary Waters elected to clear his bench. Rutgers shot 39.3% from three-point range (11-for-28).

    One of the top free throw shooting teams in the BIG EAST, Rutgers was again solid from the charity stripe, connecting on 16-of-18 (88.9%). The Rutgers offensive output was consistent throughout the lineup as 11 different Scarlet Knights found the scoring column.

    Billy McDaniel had 18 points and Nate Newell 16 for Arkansas-Monticello (18-8), which lost its third straight and fell to its second Division I opponent of the year. Tim Payne added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Boll Weevils who entered the game ranked No. 23 in the nation in Division II.

    Arkansas-Monticello showed a great deal of heart and desire throughout the contest and opened the game by seizing a 17-10 lead. The Scarlet Knights went ahead for the first time with 6:48 remaining when freshman guard Manny Quezada's 3-pointer made it 22-21. The Boll Weevils took their final lead of the game at 26-25 before Rutgers went on a 19-6 run to open a 44-32 halftime advantage.

    Rutgers returns to BIG EAST play in Saturday, when the Scarlet Knights travel to Morgantown, WV to meet a West Virginia team that just completed a season sweep of Pittsburgh, with a 70-66 road victory over the Panthers.

    DOUBY MATCHES SCHOOL SINGLE-GAME THREE-POINT MARK
    Sophomore guard Quincy Douby matched the Rutgers single-game record with a career-high eight three-pointers against Arkansas-Monticello. He finished the game 8-of-14 (.571) from three-point range. The feat had been accomplished four previous times by three different individuals. Below is a list of the five different occasions a Rutgers individual has made eight three-pointers in a single game.

    DOUBY POSTS SEASON-HIGH 26 POINTS, BESTS CAREER NUMBERS IN THREE CATEGORIES
    Douby scored a season-high 26 points against Arkansas-Monticello, breaking the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season and the 12th time in his career. He registered career highs in three-point field goals made (8), three-point field goals attempted (14) and rebounds (6). He also had five assists, two blocks and a steal.

    SHIELDS BECOMES NEWEST MEMBER OF 1,500-POINT CLUB
    Senior guard Ricky Shields became the newest member of Rutgers’ 1,500-point club with 13 points against Arkansas-Monticello. He becomes the ninth member of the group. It didn’t take long for Shields to enter the exclusive group. Entering the game one point shy of the mark, Shields nailed a three-pointer less than six minutes into the contest. He now has 1,512 in his 116-game career with the Scarlet Knights, placing him ninth on the school’s all-time scoring list, 13 points behind Roy Hinson’s (1979-83) total of 1,525 points.

    HANDING OUT PRESENTS
    Rutgers registered assists on 14 of its 15 field goals in the first half. The Scarlet Knights ended the game with a season-high 23 assists on 28 field goals, besting their previous high of 21 against Syracuse on Jan. 21. In all, 82.1 percent (23-of-28) of Rutgers’ field goals were assisted.

    RUTGERS POSTS SEASON HIGHS IN FIVE DIFFERENT TEAM CATEGORIES
    The Scarlet Knights recorded season highs in five different categories against Arkansas-Monticello. They bested their season highs in three-point field goals made (11), assists (23), steals (11), blocked shots (9) and three-point field goals attempted (28).

    RU CONSISTENT FROM THE LINE
    Rutgers successfully connected on 16-of-18 (88.9 percent) of its free throws against Arkansas-Monticello. It was the fifth time this season the Scarlet Knights have shot better than 85 percent from the free throw line.

    JOYNES HOT FROM THE LINE
    Sophomore center Byron Joynes has converted 17 of his last 21 (.810) free throws, following his 1-for-2 effort from the line against Arkansas-Monticello. He connected on 12-straight free throws from the second half of the Connecticut game on Jan. 15 to the second half of the Seton Hall game on Feb. 8.

    INGLIS MATCHES CAREER HIGH WITH 10 POINTS
    Freshman forward Jimmie Inglis matched his career high with 10 points against Arkansas-Monticello. He 3-of-4 (.750) from the field while converting all four of his free throws. It is the third time this season he achieved the feat also scoring 10 against FDU (12/22) and Villanova (1/29). The Arkansas-Monticello game is just his second game back from injury.
