Marshall (2-1) came into the game averaging 102 points but was harassed into 38.2 percent shooting and 21 turnovers by Rutgers (3-1).
Marshall's leading scorers, Ronald Blackshear and Marvin Black, were non-factors in the game.
Blackshear, who was averaging 27.5 points, had 11 points on 4-for-12 shooting and sat the final 5:48 with three fouls. Black, who was averaging 21 points, scored his only two before fouling out with 14 minutes remaining.
Marshall was just 4-for-14 from three-point range after making 50 percent of its three-pointers in the first two games.
Ricky Shields had 10 points and four steals for Rutgers, while David Anderson scored all 15 of his points in the second half.
Ardo Armpalu added 12 for Marshall.
Rutgers never trailed in the contest.
Herve Lamizana had five of his seven blocked shots in the first eight minutes to set the tone for Rutgers, while Coleman and Juel Wiggan limited Blackshear to seven first-half points.
The Knights struggled offensively in the second half, allowing Marshall to
creep within 66-51 with 5:32 remaining. Coleman then sandwiched two baskets
around an Anderson bucket as Rutgers ended with a 9-5 run.

With the Win:
Rutgers is now 3-1 after defeating Marshall 75-56. The Scarlet Knights are now
2-0 all-time against Marshall, with the last game taking place in 1967, a 93-76
win in the third-place game of the NIT at Madison Square Garden.
49 First Half Points
The 49 points scored by Rutgers in the first half against Marshall were the
most scored in a first half by RU in the Gary Waters era. It was the second-most
scored in any half under Waters, as the Knights scored 54 points in the second
half against Syracuse (2/2/02) last season. It was also the most points scored
by Rutgers in the first half of a game since Dec. 3, 1998, when RU posted 54
points in the opening 20 minutes against Columbia.
Halftime Lead
The 26-point (49-23) halftime lead Rutgers enjoyed against Marshall was the
most the Scarlet Knights have led by at halftime since 1998, when they led Columbia
by 26 (53-27) at intermission on Dec. 3, 1998.
First Half Shooting Percentage
Rutgers shot 16-of-28 (.571) from the field in the first half, the best first
half field goal percentage for the team under Gary Waters. It is the fourth-best
mark in any half in that time, with RU shooting a percentage of .593 in two
halves last season (second half vs. La Salle on 12/5/01 and second half vs.
Virginia Tech on 2/27/02), and a percentage of .577 in the second half vs. Syracuse
on 2/2/02.
Coleman’s 22 Points in the First Half Tied Personal Best
Jerome Coleman’s 22 points in the first half against Marshall tied his
personal best for points in a single half. He also scored 22 points in the second
half against Syracuse (2/2/02) last season at the RAC. The 28 points scored
against Marshall tied a season-high for Coleman (Temple, 11/24/02). This is
the eighth time Coleman has scored 25 or more points in his career at Rutgers.
Coleman Free Throws
By converting all seven free throws against the Thundering Herd, Jerome Coleman
has now made all 14 free throws he has attempted this season.
First Points for Davis
Freshman forward Cortez Davis, playing in his second game as a Scarlet Knight,
converted his first career field goal against Marshall. With 9:57 remaining
in the first half, Davis drained a three-point field goal, on his first career
shot, for the first three points of his career. Davis finished with six points
in 10 minutes.
Forcing 20 Turnovers
By forcing Marshall into 21 turnovers, three of Rutgers’ four opponents
this season have
committed at least 20 turnovers (Columbia 27, North Carolina 20, Marshall 21).
Lamizana Ties Career-High in Blocked Shots
With seven blocked shots against Marshall, Herve Lamizana tied his career-high.
He also had seven blocks against Georgetown (1/5/02) last season. Lamizana leads
the team with 15 blocks this season (3.75 per game).
