Connecticut Hands Rutgers 78-64 Loss In BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Action

  • HARTFORD, CT – Sophomore Marquis Webb (Paterson, NJ) scored a season-high 16 points to lead three Scarlet Knights in double figures, but RU dropped a 78-64 decision to No. 11/12 Connecticut Saturday afternoon at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, CT.

    The trio of Josh Boone, Charlie Villanueva and Rudy Gay powered Connecticut (10-3, 2-1). Boone finished with a game-high 20 points and12 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season, while Villanueva had a solid 14-point, 14-rebound performance for his third straight double-double. Boone and Villanueva each had six blocks in the contest. Gay added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Huskies.

    For Rutgers (6-7, 0-3), guards Ricky Shields (Upper Marlboro, MD) and Quincy Douby (Brooklyn, NY) combined for 23 points with Shields scoring 10 and Douby chipping in 13. Shields fell one rebound short of a double-double with nine rebounds on the afternoon. Senior guard Juel Wiggan (Bronx, NY) finished with nine points and a team-high six assists for RU. Freshman forward Dan Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI) registered a season-high nine rebounds and four points in a productive 22-minute stint for the Scarlet Knights.

    The Huskies scored the first eight points of the game and led 46-35 at the half, but the Scarlet Knights scored the final two points of the opening frame and 15 of the next 17 points to begin the second half to pull within six at 48-42. Shields scored five points during the 15-2 spurt.

    Connecticut responded with a 14-4 run and went on to the 78-64 victory.

    Rutgers returns to the Louis Brown Athletic Center to face Providence on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    SHIELDS MOVES TO 13TH ON SCORING CHART
    Senior guard Ricky Shields scored 10 points against the Huskies to give him 1,386 for his career. He moved past John Battle (1981-85) to 13th place on the school’s all-time scoring list. Next on the list is Jeff Greer (1997-01) with 1,394 career points.

    SHIELDS MOVES TO 27TH ON BIG EAST CAREER THREE-POINT CHART
    Ricky Shields converted two three-point field goals against UConn, to give him 112 for his career. He is now tied with Antonio Granger (1990-94) of Boston College for 27th place in the conference’s all-time list. The statistic reflects league games only.

    DOUBY EXTENDS DOUBLE-FIGURE STREAK TO 13 GAMES
    Sophomore guard Quincy Douby scored 13 points against Connecticut, extending his double-figure scoring streak to 13 games. He has topped the 20-point mark five times this season.

    WEBB REGISTERS SEASON-HIGH 16 POINTS
    Sophomore guard Marquis Webb scored a season-high 16 points vs. UConn, coming within three points of his career high against Virginia Tech March 10 of last season. Webb was 5-of-10 (.500) from the field, while hitting all five of his free throw attempts. He also pulled down five rebounds and recorded two assists and two steals.

    WATERSTRADT SETS CAREER NUMBERS
    Freshman forward Dan Waterstradt had an active day, pulling down a career-high nine rebounds in a career-high 22 minutes of action against Connecticut.

    JOYNES TIES CAREER HIGH WITH EIGHT REBOUNDS
    Sophomore center Byron Joynes tied his career high with eight rebounds against Connecticut. The game marked the third time he has achieved the mark.

    WIGGAN CONTINUES TO PRODUCE
    Coming off a career-high 23-point game against Georgetown on Tuesday, senior guard Juel Wiggan scored nine points and added six assists and four rebounds against UConn. He is averaging 16.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists over his last two games.
