  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers senior guard Ricky Shields drilled a three-point jumper with 0.4 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but No. 12/16 Pittsburgh fought back to earn a 66-63 overtime victory in front of a sellout crowd of 8,011 at the Rutgers Athletic Center.

Pittsburgh freshman guard Ronald Ramon scored a career-high 21 points as the Panthers ended their two-game losing streak. Ramon looked like he would be the hero in regulation when his 3-pointer with 7.6 seconds left gave the Panthers (11-2, 1-1 Big East) a 58-55 lead.

But, following a timeout, Shields hit a three-pointer from the left side for Rutgers (6-5, 0-1) to force overtime.

Pitt, which had been ranked as high as No. 10, took the lead for good at 64-63 on a drive by Antonio Graves with 41 seconds to play. It was Graves' first points in more than 39 minutes.

He missed the free throw that would have completed a three-point play, but Chevon Troutman tipped the rebound out to Graves. Graves, who finished with seven points, was fouled with 25 seconds left and made two free throws to make it 66-63.

Rutgers missed a pair of three-point attempts -- the last by Shields with 1.1 seconds to go -- around two missed free throws by Krauser.

The game was played at a slow pace, with the 35-second shot clock usually reaching single digits and several possessions ending with shots as clock was running out.

Ramon entered the game averaging 7.2 points with a high of 12 against Howard. He was 7-for-11 from the field, including 5-for-9 from 3-point range. Chris Taft added 17 points and nine rebounds for Pitt, while Troutman had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Krauser, who leads Pitt in scoring with a 16.5 average, had seven points on 2-for-6 shooting and he committed nine turnovers, three on offensive fouls. He had 41 turnovers in the first 12 games.

Shields had 18 points for the Scarlet Knights, while sophomore guard Quincy Douby added 17. This was the Panthers' seventh straight win over Rutgers. Pittsburgh was facing an 0-2 start in the league after going 13-3 each of the last three seasons.

Troutman scored on a breakaway dunk with 16:11 to play to give Pittsburgh a 41-33 lead. He was called for hanging on the rim, and the two free throws by Shields started an 11-0 Rutgers run that was capped by senior guard Juel Wiggan's three-pointer that made it 44-41 with 12:30 left.

There were six lead changes and two ties the rest of the way.

    POSTGAME NOTES

RUTGERS TIES BIG EAST MARK WITH THREE TURNOVERS
Rutgers committed just three turnovers today against Pittsburgh tying the BIG EAST record for fewest turnovers in a league game, equaling Connecticut’s total vs. West Virginia on Feb. 7, 2004 and Seton Hall’s total against St. John’s on Feb. 25, 1981.

    DOUBY HOT FROM THE LINE
Since the first half of Rutgers’ 72-58 victory over Rhode Island, sophomore guard Quincy Douby has been automatic from the free throw line, hitting 13 straight, including his 3-for-3 performance from the line today.

    CONTAINING KRAUSER
The Scarlet Knights’ defense held Pittsburgh leading scorer Carl Krauser to just seven points, nine below his season average. Krauser entered the game as the BIG EAST’s eighth leading scorer, averaging 16.5 ppg.

    FILLING THE SEATS
Today’s sellout crowd of 8,011 was the second-largest crowd of the 2004-05 season (8,079 vs. Wisconsin on Dec. 4, 2004) thus far. The Scarlet Knights had four sellouts last season. Today’s sellout is also the 17th in the Gary Waters era and the 51st in the history of the RAC.

    SHIELDS APPROACHES 1,400 CAREER POINTS
With his 18-point effort today, Ricky Shields now has 1,368 career points, just 17 points shy of 13th place all time (John Battle, 1981-85).

SHIELDS MOVES UP ON BIG EAST THREE-POINT CHART
Senior guard Ricky Shields moved into 30th place on the BIG EAST all-time three-point field goals made list with four today to give him 109 career three-pointers. The category reflects league games only.

RU FINISHES PERFECT FROM THE FREE THROW LINE
The Scarlet Knights ended the night a perfect 7-for-7 (1.000) from the free throw line against the Panthers. The mark is a season-best for RU, eclipsing its 13-of-14 (.929) effort in a season-opening victory over Charlotte.

FIRST OVERTIME GAME OF 2004-05 CAMPAIGN
The first game of the 2005 calendar year also brought the season’s first overtime contest. It marked the Scarlet Knights’ first overtime affair since an 84-81 victory over Iowa State in the NIT Semifinals on March 30 of last season. RU is now 5-2 in overtime games in the four-year Gary Waters era.

    DOUBY ECLIPSES 600-POINT PLATEAU
Sophomore guard Quincy Douby scored 17 points today to give him 601 for his 44-game Scarlet Knight career. He leads the team in scoring this season with 17.2 ppg after averaging 12.5 as a freshman last season. He is averaging 13.7 points for his RU career.
