  • MANHATTAN, KS – The backcourt duo of Ricky Shields and Quincy Douby combined for 46 points as Rutgers knocked Kansas State from the ranks of the unbeaten with an impressive 76-66 victory in front of 10,133 at Bramlage Coliseum on Wednesday evening.

The Scarlet Knights (6-3) successfully ran their winning streak to four games behind the play of Shields, who scored 25 points and made six of nine three point field goal attempts. Not to be outdone, Douby netted 21 points – the fifth time this season that the sophomore guard eclipsed the 20-point plateau. Collectively, the two shot 16-of-26 from the field, including nine-of-15 from three point range, and committed just one turnover. It was the third time this season Shields and Douby had combined to score over 40 points.

The Scarlet Knights shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53), while Kansas State shot just 38.3 percent (23-of-60). Rutgers had held its previous four opponents to an average of 56.5 points on 37.9 percent shooting.

Douby and Shields came out strong in the first half. Shields had 13 points and Douby added 12 as the pair connected on 10-of-14 shots, including five-of-nine three-pointers. Kansas State got to within 10 points only twice in the first half behind 32.3 percent shooting (10-of-31) and seven turnovers.

The Scarlet Knights led 35-25 at halftime, but the Wildcats were able to get close the gap in the second half, going on a 14-4 run that included a three-pointer from Clint Stewart followed by a reverse layup from Marques Hayden that made it 54-52 with 8:17 left in the game. But Cartier Martin squandered an opportunity to tie it when he stepped out of bounds while driving baseline. Shields then nailed a 3-pointer to halt a five-minute scoring drought for Rutgers. The Wildcats got to within four on a Lance Harris 3-pointer that made it 62-58 with 3:48 to play, but the duo of Shields and Douby outlasted their opponents down the stretch.

Two-time BIG EAST Rookie of the Week Ollie Bailey had another productive night, notching 15 points and four rebounds. He also made five-of-seven attempts line, and as a team RU shot 17-of-23 (73.9 percent) from the charity stripe.

Off the bench, junior Jimmie Inglis provided a career-high 24 minutes as he scored six points and grabbed six rebounds.

Led by Marquis Webb, the Rutgers defense limited KSU leading scorer Jeremiah Massey, who entered the game averaging 16.5 points per game, to just seven points on two-of-10 shooting.

The Scarlet Knights finish their two-game road swing when they face Air Force on Friday, Dec. 31, at 6:00 p.m. EST in Colorado Springs, CO.
