  • PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Sophomore guard Quincy Douby scored 21 points, senior guard Ricky Shields added 18 and freshman forward Ollie Bailey recorded his first career ‘double-double’ with 11 points and 10 rebounds, as Rutgers used a big first half for a 72-58 win over Rhode Island Saturday night in front of 6,929 fans at the RAC.

The Scarlet Knights switching between man-to-man and zone defenses, forced Rhode Island into 19.2 percent shooting (5-for-26) in the first half, while shooting 52% themselves en route to seizing a commanding 37-16 halftime lead.

Rhode Island opened the second half on a 15-3 run to slice the lead to 40-31 with 15:04 left in the game but that was as close as the Rams would get as Douby knifed his way into the paint for a layup that gave Rutgers a double-digit advantage once again.

The Scarlet Knights (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak while handing Rhode Island (2-6) its sixth loss in seven games.

After being held to one field goal in the final 13:39 of its game against Princeton Wednesday night, Rutgers reversed that trend in the first half against the Rams. With the score tied at 7-7, Rutgers embarked on a 27-4 run to open a 34-11 lead. Shields had nine points and Douby seven during the run.

After Jon Lucky hit a 3-pointer to pull Rhode Island within 15-10, Rutgers scored 19 of the next 20 points as the Rams went 9:55 without a basket.

Scott Hazelton paced Rhode Island with 19 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

Rutgers sophomore guard Marquis Webb had a fine floor game, scoring a season-high 12 points, while grabbing three rebounds, dishing out four assists and not committing a single turnover in 37 minutes of action.

    POSTGAME NOTES

    DE-FENSE
The 16 first-half points by Rhode Island marked the lowest offensive output by a Rutgers opponent since Long Island was held to 16 points in the first half on December 20, 2003. Rutgers’ 21-point halftime lead also marked RU’s largest halftime lead since a 63-19 advantage against Northern Colorado on February 17, 2004.

Additionally, the Scarlet Knights held Rhode Island to a season-low 19.2 percent (5-for-26) shooting in the first half. The last time Rutgers held an opponent under 20 percent shooting in a half was in a 54-41 victory against Morris Brown (first half, 15.0 percent, 12/28/02).

    SEEING DOUBLE
Freshmen forward Ollie Bailey continued his stellar all-around play and registered his first career ‘double-double.’ He finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes of action.

    WATERS AT THE RAC
In his fourth season “on the Banks,” head coach Gary Waters is 43-12 at the Louis Brown Athletic Center, including a 26-5 mark in non-conference games.

    SHARING THE BALL
Rutgers registered a season-high 20 assists tonight (previous high was 17 vs. Penn State 12/1/04). Overall, 20 of the Scarlet Knights’ 25 baskets were assisted.

    BAILEY, JOYNES SET SEASON HIGHS
Ollie Bailey and Byron Joynes were forces on the glass tonight for Rutgers, as each registered season-highs in rebounds. Bailey, who also registered his first career double-double, pulled down 10 rebounds, while Joynes had seven caroms in 34 minutes of action.

    1-2 PUNCH
Ricky Shields and Quincy Douby combined for 39 points tonight, marking the fourth time this season that the duo has scored 30 or more points. Douby, who registered his fourth 20-point game of the season, led the way with 21 points and six assists.
